That doesn't mean people need to look or believe the same. But it does mean their beliefs, actions, and views need to be aligned enough (Ie. within a set buffer zone or spectrum of what is an acceptable threshold) to fit the "American Identity" ie. Don't kneel for the national anthem or desecrate the flag. As we are not bound by race, religion....we have to be bound by something. (I believe its mostly belief in our capitalist type system, but that's simplistic). Once you lose that bind, you get social dissolution. These folks in the article, have cross the threshold of what is acceptable for American level of free speech over into to the enemy of the state category.

Our identity is bound by land, that’s it. The moment we try to draw borders inside our own country, we desecrate the very culture we claim to love. The “American identity” is entirely based off of other countries, as we are not natives to this land. As such, whatever new culture comes in is a continuation of the same things as before, just from a different source. If we have to decide what culture is and isn’t allowed, we page a dark path.
