Ukraine's battlefield position is more precarious than at any point since the early days of Russian President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion.
And it's about to get worse, Major-General Vadym Skibitsky, deputy head of Ukrainian Military Intelligence (HUR,) said in an interview with the Economist.
In what was an unusually pessimistic interview for a senior Kyiv official, Skibitsky predicted that in May Russia will press forward with its plan to fully occupy the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where it recently made territorial gains as Ukraine waited for Western military aid.
The potential fall of the strategically important city of Chasiv Yar will jeopardize Ukraine’s last stronghold in the Donetsk region.
“Our problem is very simple: We have no weapons. They always knew April and May would be a difficult time for us,” Skibitsky said.

Just speculating, but the Ukraine aid is likely (in part) a cover for American military modernization in order to keep up with China.
I imagine all that money headed to Lockheed, etc. isn’t all being used to re-fabricate 1970’s technologies.
I would be curious to know how much goes to building newer gear that America is keeping in its stockpiles. If this is the case, the investment will continue under other names once the war in Ukraine pauses.

According to Speaker Johnson, the $61 billion funding bill for Ukraine was more palatable because it was only a “loan.” But that loan doesn’t have an interest rate, maturity date, or collateral requirement. Have you ever seen a loan like that?

Even if the Ukraine War ended tomorrow, it would take over 5 years to replenish the U.S. stockpiles of artillery shells, Javelins and Stingers. But Biden sees no tradeoffs between helping Ukraine and Israel. And he wants to rattle the saber against China while he’s at it.
