I feel like school truancy is stupid because good kids who have hard things going on in life, and can't always be in school shouldn't have to bare consequences schools should at least speak with the students . But if a kid doesn't try and it naturally bad they should bare the consequences.

 @9H2CHT9 from New Mexico  disagreed…3yrs3Y

School truancy is an excuse to participate in these hard things in life such as gangs, drugs, and sexual relations so it should be outlawed.

#9 Engaged School Truancy

School truancy is simply the act of skipping school without a formal excuse. Although it CAN be used to participate in those things, so can anything else that frees up time that would otherwise be spent in a governmental institution. Should everyone's entire days be government-operated to prevent crime?

 @9H2C4ZF from Utah  disagreed…3yrs3Y

I agree with this statement because its saying that good kids get punished for what bad kids do and they dont get punished for it

 @9H3LKK4Socialist from Virginia  disagreed…3yrs3Y

There are buses provided to students. There’s no excuse other than medical reasons as to why a student would miss enough school to qualify as truant. Even in the situation where the student is unable to go because of a medical condition they shouldn’t get something they didn’t earn.

*Before you read this, sorry for the ramble-y rant.

Agreed, school truancy is kinda dumb. It's like "go to school or your parents go to jail"... :/

I don't think kids should be punished for 'not trying' and being 'naturally bad'. I think school should be more-engaging. Cut out the excess time spent doing nothing! I loved the academic part of school in elementary and middle school, but in high school we learned practically nothing and I dropped out even though I had straight A's because, among other reasons, I doubted that I could even get a GED given…  Read more

If the government shouldn't decriminalize school truancy, what will you do to make school more-engaging and educational? How will you provide better access to school for those who can't get to school easily? Etc.

Basically, how would you make school worth going to? At the moment, school isn't very worth going to, so I feel like it's not fair to punish kids for truancy. But, Idk.

 @9FSV989 from Nevada  disagreed…3yrs3Y

It should only be towards children who do not attend school on their own accord. If it is for a good reason they should not be marked truant as you never know what they are going through.

 @9H22JZH from Ohio  disagreed…3yrs3Y

My argument is that some kids can have problems at home, family emergencies, or lack of a way to get to school. They should not be criminalized if they're less than 10 minutes late or don't have transportation.

 @BCRWZB6Republican from Pennsylvania  disagreed…3mos3MO

Student's parents and their tax money are paying for their education in schools. Criminalizing a student for missing a certain amount of school is wrong because of that.

 @BCB4PF3Independent from New York  disagreed…3mos3MO

Criminalizing school truancy only adds added pressure on students to attend school, even if they truly need a mental health day or sick day. It also can cause risks if students are coming in sick sick because they don't want to be penalized for missing school.

 @BBJSLVV from Texas  agreed…4mos4MO

Just think of an average 15 year old. Would they really go to school and learn trigonometry or stay home and play Minecraft

 @BB28YTR from California  disagreed…5mos5MO

To be punish by not going to school on your own choice is like you chose not going to work and get jail for it. I feel like it should depend on the students or persons and it's their choice whether they want to go to school or not.

 @B9WHB73 from California  disagreed…5mos5MO

School truancy can be cuased by resolved other ways beside involving the law, Students all live diffrent lives and situations outside of school making some have difficulties attending school

 @B8M6MQ9 from Nebraska  agreed…7mos7MO

Keeping school truancy illegal will keep more kids in school, as they will be disincentivized to leave school, and therefore incentivized to stay in school.

 @B86C98V from Texas  disagreed…8mos8MO

I think by skipping even though they've been at school everyday for other first half it should be valid because you don't know what people go through at home so they might be skipping because they burned out.

 @B7LYFCGWomen’s Equality from Iowa  disagreed…9mos9MO

If the student has medical problems that keeps them from attending school or mental health issues that keeps them from attending school they risk being penalized by the legal system. Now if someone is just skipping school just to be skipping then yes they deserve to get into trouble but for medical issues that are or can be documented shouldnt be allowed to be criminally charged for truancy.

 @B7B52TX from Kentucky  disagreed…9mos9MO

When in a dangerous situation kids will not have acess to reach parents nor be able to get home safely if needed.

 @B3VGV2T  from California  agreed…1yr1Y

To argue against school truancy, focus on the significant negative impacts on students' academic outcomes and long-term well-being, citing data and statistics to support your claims. Highlight the correlation between regular attendance and higher grades, reduced dropout rates, and increased opportunities for post-secondary education and employment. Furthermore, emphasize the societal costs of truancy, including higher crime rates and increased welfare dependency.

COVID proved that people can get work done and learn from being at home. Some students are struggling with issues and aren't comfortable coming to school, but don't necessarily need to go to the doctor.

 @9J64MRPWomen’s Equality from California  disagreed…2yrs2Y

I say no because people should have to right to keep their kids home without having to get charged with a crime that is not hurting anyone .

 @BC6V2RS from Kentucky  disagreed…3mos3MO

The reason I say no is because many people have a 1 parent situation and have no rides as well as traffic and other factors

 @B8YZSVL from California  disagreed…6mos6MO

The most effective counterargument to the "No" position on school truancy is that while punitive measures alone can be ineffective or harmful, proactive, support-based interventions that address the root causes of absenteeism are essential for student success and overall well-being.

 @B8XKKLS from Texas  agreed…7mos7MO

Punitive truancy measures often harm disadvantaged students and are less effective than supportive programs that address the real causes of absenteeism.

 @B8RHFYJ from Illinois  disagreed…7mos7MO

If certain circumstances happen in a child’s life that make a student unable to make it to school, that shouldn’t be a legal problem.

 @B2XNK8X  from California  disagreed…1yr1Y

A strong counter-argument to the No position on school truancy is that allowing students to miss school without consequences can lead to significant long-term negative effects on their academic performance, social development, and future career opportunities, as consistent attendance is crucial for building foundation skills and knowledge. Studies have shown that chronic absenteeism is linked to higher dropout rates and lower achievement levels, and implementing strict truancy policies can help ensure students remain engaged in their education, ultimately benefiting both the individual and society as a whole.

The school system makes learning painful. Purposeful learning is far more valuable over the course of one's life

 @9ZFRHC8  from Ohio  disagreed…2yrs2Y

They say that kids need to come to school in order to have a good education but it doesn't mean that they aren't learning if they miss some days unless it's an absurd amount.

People who have truancy at school miss all of their classwork and can't get to it until the next day or the day after that. They could end up lagging behind and getting caught up in old assignments they failed to complete.

 @9LYTKYL  from Florida  disagreed…2yrs2Y

Students have different things they have to worry about like church, work, or taking care of family (siblings)

 @9LY5B3Q from Tennessee  agreed…2yrs2Y

I am a teacher, most students that are here don't want to be here, if you take away the possible consequence, you take away any incentive to come and do well.

 @9LFYYN4  from California  disagreed…2yrs2Y

Every child should be free, school is not a prison and every kid should come to school willingly by their parents or their own interest.

 @9GXRP5J from Minnesota  agreed…3yrs3Y

If we have more educated, well rounded students and more people are trying to get a good education, this increases the amount of educated and intelligent people around the country, there is nothing wrong with that that i can think of.

 @9GTHJX7 from New York  agreed…3yrs3Y

There are a variety of reasons students are truant. There needs to be support services from the local community to promote school attendance and educate the parents to know that there are attendance requirements.

 @9GSXCLJ from Illinois  agreed…3yrs3Y

If not everyone graduates with basic knowledge from school, then how are the jobs requiring basic knowledge going to be filled. We can't have a country of only burger flippers.

 @9GY6X8P from West Virginia  disagreed…3yrs3Y

Some students can’t make it to school on time and the school punishes them if they’re late so they would rather skip the day than be punished for just coming in late.

 @9FPRDHM from Virginia  disagreed…3yrs3Y

It's stupid. Things happen to where kids can't come to school like getting sick. They shouldn't be punished for getting sick

 @9FPL67T from South Carolina  agreed…3yrs3Y

All children under the age of seventeen should be required to go to school with a students being able to miss school if the school had approved the reason for the absence.

 @9FNBX5W from West Virginia  disagreed…3yrs3Y

It is stupid to count truancy against kids when most of the time they can’t even get there by themselves.

 @9FPT86Q from Illinois  disagreed…3yrs3Y

The school truancy is so unfair for students, it should be decriminalized. Some students have issues with making it on time or with transportation.

 @9GMN7F3 from Utah  disagreed…3yrs3Y

schools don't know what the kid is going through and someone shouldn't be charged for skipping a class like art

 @9FZ9XB7 from Ohio  disagreed…3yrs3Y

i think kids that attend school should have at least a month of school to miss because some kids just do be tired and need a break we all do and nobody can disagree with that but they still will attend most of the school year. it also shouldn't be that big of a consequence.

 @9FX7RDH from Virginia  disagreed…3yrs3Y

Some students may not have reliable transportation to get to school. Others may not do well in a school environment and would do better elsewhere, so why should they be legally punished?

 @BF5RJBC from Nebraska  disagreed…3 days3D

if your kid already knows how to read, write, math and has shown they know their stuff, they shouldn't be punished for not going.
