I do not think defunding the police is a fundamentally functional method for approaching the systemic sociological problems ubiquitously inherent within law enforcement. Re-education and more stringent training, oversight and management for officers in how to deal with and de-escalate situations is urgently needed. Additionally whilst I do believe police being called to homes for wellness checks or to de-escalate situations involving developmentally disabled or otherwise documented emotionally, psychologically or mentally altered persons should be involved in such matters, I also believe it is crucially important for them to receive adequate snd appropriate training for such instances and should perhaps even be accompanied by law enforcement officers who perhaps specialise in such matters. So my honest answer is we shouldn’t defund them police. We should, however, reform the methods by which we train and prepare the police for their dangerous ans necessary jobs and we should repurpose some of the funding provided to them in order to facilitate these needs and perhaps establish new positions within their ranks that reflect an appropriate response to the needs of the police performing their expected duties snd the needs of the communities they serve.
