A common argument amongst liberals for the U.N is that it performs necessary functions, and we need to fund it in order for it to be improved instead of abandoning it.
The same argument can apply here. If we defund the police, the police cannot do their jobs. Just like the United Nations, schools, and any other organization. If you want body cameras, that costs money. If you want better training, that costs money.

It's hard to recruit police officers who are often underpaid for the risks that they take.
The term "de-fund" is misguided and is hurting recruiting plus causing in a spike in early retirements:
