Should police departments be allowed to use military grade equipment?
Yes, but with strict training on how and when to use the equipment
The police should be the keepers of the peace the enforcers of laws but in america they are known for their ego's and the devastation they cause to families and communities. If the police are using military grade weapons on the same people they are supposed to protect why would we trust them to help us . 53 people have died and 300 of 1,984 people injured are paralyzed from rubber bullets. The use of military grade equipment turns a police officers community into a battle ground and could easily lead to a slippery slope using military grade equipment for situations that do not need them such as peaceful protests. Even with stricter training there is a 100% chance in my eyes that that equipment would be used improperly and in the wrong situations. Many countries around the world have prioritized non violent, community oriented strategies and the results have been extremely positive. 19 countries around the world don't allow their police to carry guns and those countries are much safer than the us.
