Minimum wage was designed to protect the American nuclear family - One income earner who supports up to a family of four with food, housing, transportation, education, and regular vacations and play without working more than 40 hours a week. Employers should be required to meet this expectation for pay and be limited in the use of contract or part-time staff or be required to pay a special tax to offset their lack of contribution to maintaining a living wage.
