Mr. Scott’s main problem was that he resembled too many of his Republican rivals in his reluctance to take the fight directly to Donald Trump.
Like Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley, Mr. Scott spent most of the campaign ignoring Mr. Trump and hoping that his large lead would somehow narrow on its own.
When the candidates engaged the former president, the criticisms were much too tepid and usually wide of the mark.
Chiding Mr. Trump for skipping the debates or for berating Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the Oct. 7 terror attacks is warranted, but it amounts to a boxer throwing jabs instead of body blows.
Chris Christie, who may soon meet Mr. Scott’s fate, has been the welcome exception. While Mr. DeSantis and Ms. Haley have toggled between condemning the Trump criminal prosecutions and ducking questions on the subject, Mr. Christie has been telling anyone who will listen that Mr. Trump’s legal troubles alone make him unfit to be the Republican nominee.
