Although I don’t like to think about it, what’s to stop Hamas from just leaving the hostages in the tunnels and escaping themselves. What’s their incentive to keep them alive?

If they kill the hostages they have nothing left to bargain with and their leadership in Qatar will be dead men walking.

If you were Hamas why would you bargain with people who's war aim is to kill you. The Hostages are for PR purposes, they are not the ones keeping Hamas alive and Hamas know this, if the Hostages drown, Israel will look bad not Hamas. Remember what happened with the Bibas baby.

Exactly. they can film them drowning to show the IDF drowns its own hostages. Someone didn't think this though.

I assume you can flood most of the tunnels enough so life becomes uncomfortable without drowning them. Imagine standing or living with constant sea water for a few days
