Donald Trump is sparking fears among those who understand the inner workings of the Pentagon that he would convert the nonpartisan U.S. military into the muscular arm of his political agenda as he makes comments about dictatorship and devalues the checks and balances that underpin the nation’s two-century-old democracy.
A circle of appointees independent of Trump’s political operation steered him away from ideas that would have pushed the limits of presidential power in his last term, according to books they’ve written and testimony given to Congress. Most were gone by the end. In a new term, many former officials worry that Trump would instead surround himself with loyalists unwilling to say no.
Now, bracing for Trump’s potential return, a loose-knit network of public interest groups and lawmakers is quietly devising plans to try to foil any efforts to expand presidential power, which could include pressuring the military to cater to his political needs.
Those taking part in the effort told NBC News they are studying Trump’s past actions and 2024 policy positions so that they will be ready if he wins in November. That involves preparing to take legal action and send letters to Trump appointees spelling out consequences they’d face if they undermine constitutional norms.
So a group of political hacks, that has never been voted into office by anyone, will use their business to try and manipulate our military members into refusing orders from someone that will most likely be voted into office by We The People? Is that what you are trying to say?
Treason, that’s called treason
@9CJ6CB64mos4MO
Treason is trying to centralize power inside of the executive branch, destroy the independence of the DOJ, and destroying separation of church and state while HE HIMSELF has thousands of tightly knit and well-funded organizations helping fund the Heritage Foundation to give him the power to overthrow the very democracy he claims to support.
@ISIDEWITH4mos4MO
Is it acceptable for a president to skirt the checks and balances system to achieve their agenda?
@9CJ6CB64mos4MO
Absolutely not, strongly against that. FDR did do that for a time, though he did not try to drastically centralize executive power, Trump will do that, and his goals won’t be to create welfare, but to destroy it and separation of powers.

Ever heard of his court packing scheme to allow the President to pack the Supreme Court for his own personal interests, or the thousands of unconstitutional executive orders he signed, bypassing Congress, or the 2,000 Americans he knowingly allowed to be slaughtered at Pearl Harbour despite (and this has been proved under the Freedom of Information Act) knowing a Japanese attack was coming to Pearl Harbour? I can go on if that's not enough for you....
@9CJ6CB64mos4MO
And he also gave us the Manhattan Project, social security, revived the economy during WW2, and was the only president ever to win 4 terms and have the highest amount of states in the electoral college. I COULD go on as well. Do I approve of everything he did? No, but there’s pros and cons here, and they drastically outweigh the cons. Besides, less than 10 of his orders were actually revoked.
@Patriot-#1776Constitution4mos4MO
Social security is a scam, forcing people to put money into a program they may or may not agree with rather than making it a voluntary choice, and then spending the money of the people you cheated until the whole scheme imposed, as we are seeing today. Social security should be privatised as an insurance company that workers can choose to invest money in or choose to have no association with, because it is immoral and defies the natural right to both liberty and property to use the coercion of the Law to compel others to purchase or invest in something, it is fraudulent and disgusting and I… Read more

What dangers might arise if the U.S. military is used for partisan politics?
@9CJ6CB64mos4MO
This thing called a coup.
@9J59ZCL4mos4MO
People have a bad feeling about this
@Momof7 4mos4MO
I hate Trump and want any other Republican in office next
@9J52BKJ4mos4MO
Coming from a Cuban family who have been victims of dictatorship in Cuba. Using the military for dictatorial ways is very wrong.
@9J4ZTVYIndependent4mos4MO
It’s a terrifying abuse of power.
@9J4ZNGZ4mos4MO
Waste of time, report real news.
@9J4QKGH4mos4MO
Individuals should not be able to use the military for personal gain, no matter their position. The military is a public service.
We have to talk of single and double quotes when there is a breaking news story. On here, the single quotes are UK English. Single quotes? Double quotes! U.S.A.! U.S.A! U.S.A.!
@9J4LJ8H4mos4MO
Trump is unfit for office, and should be disqualified -- especially as he speaks of destroying democracy and abusing the power of the office.
@9J48W684mos4MO
Is this still a democracy? How is someone that is a rapist, insurrectionist, took foreign money strictly against us policy (insert many more anti qualifications here) still on our ballot!?
@9J3ZZTK4mos4MO
Dictatorship is against the congressional voting system that requires their written permission for Trump's action. Without a second opinion or a judgement, Trump would easily be able to abuse said power.
@9J3ZPW94mos4MO
I think that he'll become a dictator and the idiots who idolize him will follow whatever he says even if it's bad for them.
@9J3ZCR84mos4MO
He's an embarrassment to our country.
Misusing the military for dictatorial purposes would harm democracy by ignoring checks and balances.
@9J3YS924mos4MO
Trump should never be back in the White House. He’s a frightening egomaniac whose interest lies only in himself. Even some of the people who served under him when he was president have provided evidence that he was less than a commander in chief.
