The movement objecting to President Biden’s position on Israel by voting “uncommitted” drew a significant share of the vote on Tuesday in Minnesota despite having a hastily organized and low-budget campaign.
With more than 95 percent of ballots counted early Wednesday, “uncommitted” had earned 20 percent support, enough to send delegates to the Democratic National Convention. The number of protest votes in Minnesota, more than 45,000, suggested that dissatisfaction over Mr. Biden’s stance on the war in Gaza had spread beyond Muslim Americans to progressives and younger voters.
The Biden campaign, which has tried to downplay the significance of the “uncommitted” efforts, issued a statement early Wednesday about the Minnesota results.
“The president believes making your voice heard and participating in our democracy is fundamental to who we are as Americans,” said Lauren Hitt, a campaign spokeswoman. “He shares the goal for an end to the violence and a just, lasting peace in the Middle East. He’s working tirelessly to that end.”
Still, Minnesota’s large population of Somali Americans, progressives and late-deciding voters with a history of backing quirky independent candidates allowed “uncommitted” to put up a strong showing.

Coupled with the Michigan results, it really looks like Biden has a problem in the upper mid-west. His campaign has a vast industry of denial that will pretend the problem isn't there, but if they want to win they have to address it.
@Bl4ckBallotHeronDemocrat3mos3MO
I think you’ve matched their denial industry with your motivated reasoning startup
@F3deralistJellyfishGreen3mos3MO
643 uncommitted votes against Obama in 2012 versus north of 45,000 against Biden in 2024. That's a problem. Not too late for Biden to fix but he has to be honest about this and not deny it.
@Bl4ckBallotHeronDemocrat3mos3MO
Okay, what is the problem, the fix and what constitutes being “honest” about it?
@F3deralistJellyfishGreen3mos3MO
I think the first thing is to stop abetting the slaughter of a captive civilian population.
@DelightfulImpalaSocialist3mos3MO
Doesn’t Minnesota have a lot of Somalis?
If so, that’s a Gaza vote
Yeah, it's a Gaza vote
@SolidRedWhiteBlueDemocrat3mos3MO
Oh, it's a Gaza vote. So Biden doesn't really have any problem at all since Trump is unquestionably much worse on Gaza and these voters have nowhere to go in the general. Problem solved. Whew!
The smug approach sure worked out well in 2016, keep it up!
@SolidRedWhiteBlueDemocrat3mos3MO
I'm not smug about the election in general. But Biden having a Gaza problem in Minnesota or the greater Midwest? Seems fanciful
