So what does the Democrat from New York want? He hopes a different Israeli Prime Minister would advance a two-state solution of the sort Mr. Netanyahu has resisted. This reflects the political neurosis developing among Democrats, who wish some deus ex machina would allow Israel to “win” the war against Hamas in a way that would minimize the anger of the anti-Israel left in the U.S.
This is foolish on the merits, and Mr. Schumer’s intervention may backfire in Israel, where it was roundly denounced Thursday as unwelcome interference. It’s not obvious any Israeli politician would rush after Oct. 7 to negotiate with the Palestinians over a state unless or until Hamas is defeated in Gaza—at a minimum. The idea that Israel is the obstacle to Middle East peace, rather than the Iranian regime sponsoring terror proxies across the region, is so naive it’s more suited to a faculty lounge than the Senate floor.
The bigger problem is Mr. Schumer’s own surrender. Rather than placating the anti-Israel left in his party, he and President Biden ought to be trying to lead them.
The first half of Mr. Schumer’s speech largely set out the reasons that friendship with Israel remains in America’s national interest, and what’s at stake for Israel in its war. As uncharacteristic as it would have been for Mr. Schumer, it would have been better for his country, his party, Israel and his own reputation if he had left it at that and stopped talking.

76% of Israelis opposed Netanyahu continuing as Prime Minister in a November 2023 poll. Chuck Schumer is not taking a position that is counter to mainstream Israeli public opinion. In fact, it's a much more marginal opinion to actively support the continued rule of Netanyahu
@N0minati0nTealTranshumanist2mos2MO
But he IS taking a position. And interfering in another country’s elections.
@FabulousKoalaGreen2mos2MO
Does AIPAC interfere in our elections?
@N0minati0nTealTranshumanist2mos2MO
You should go find out what the acronym “AIPAC” stands for. And then re-read the First Amendment.
@FabulousKoalaGreen2mos2MO
Ah of course. It's only interference if it's happening to your country. How antisemitic of me.
bc the USA Never interferes with any elections ever lol!

@PassionateActivi5tMountain2mos2MO
I think the issue is timing. Israelis don't want Netanyahu around but I think a majority probably don't want to change leaders in the middle of the war.
@EcstaticLibertyGreen2mos2MO
Chuck Schumer said Israel must hold new elections to throw out the religious extremists like Smotrich and Ben-Gvir. But after months of radicalization from the war, a new election could easily put *more* religious extremists into power. In fact, that seems the likelier outcome
@AwedCivilRightsSocialist2mos2MO
Chuck Schumer also said We're gonna get you that $14 billion regardless of what happens so just hang tight
@BetrayedBallotTranshumanist2mos2MO
Sorry that's panic porn
No one in Israel cares what Schumer says
But Israel will def hold elections soon - when Hamas War pause or halt - and no way will "religious extremists" gain seats in the Knesset. Netanyahu will lose majority/PM and "religious extremists" will lose seats or maybe maintain but if latter still go back to powerless fringe where were before Netanyahu partnered with them and gave senior roles for first time
@HeronRichieLibertarian2mos2MO
really don’t think that kind of thing is helpful. It’s not Schumer’s job to pick a prime minister for Israel, that might well backfire. It would be his job to stop financing war crimes, but of course he’ll never do that.
@MinorityWhipCamelGreen2mos2MO
One of the reasons Netanyahu is keeping the war going is that he wants nobody analyzing the 10/7 terrorist attack and asking why so many warnings were ignored, and Nova festival moved into the line of fire, and hostages fired at along w terrorists. So I doubt he’ll be reelected.
I would think it would lead to a more centre-left leaning government. I wonder if there is any polling data for this.

Gantz Beats Israel In Most Recent Polls
@9CJ6CB62mos2MO
Geez, are these articles just written by different reporters or writers on @ISIDEWITH or something? Personally, I applaud his commitment, but I’d say it’s poor timing since that puts relations to actually forge a ceasefire on hold. My personal opinions outside of that remain apart from this discussion, but I do agree with Schumer’s message, not with him speaking it right now.
@Bl4ckBallotCodSocialist2mos2MO
Netanyahu may not have as much support, but a poll of Israelis showed overwhelming support for the action in Gaza. A change in leadership will change nothing. Schumer's little speech is about the upcoming election and the Democrat's support of ethnic cleansing.
Dems distance themselves from Biden's Gaza disaster. The program is to now blame "right wing" Netanyahu and his "right wing" backers in the US. Dump the Gaza mess on Republicans. Schumer/Dems offered up the bait and the Reps are taking it, hook, line and sinker.
Israel doesn't have anyone to start the peace process. Their people don’t want it. This is purely theater. They have to lose first or it becomes unlivable before their mentality changes
