In a significant demonstration of military cooperation and a clear message to Beijing, thousands of Filipino and American troops have commenced the largest annual joint military exercises in the Philippines. This year's drills, which are being closely watched by international observers, come at a time of heightened tensions in the South China Sea, a region fraught with territorial disputes and growing assertiveness from China. The exercises, known as Balikatan, which means 'shoulder-to-shoulder' in Tagalog, aim to bolster the defense capabilities of both nations and ensure a safer global community amidst the backdrop of potential regional conflicts.
The strategic importance of these drills cannot be overstated, as they include the US military's first deployment in the Philippines of a missile system with a range that could reach China's southern provinces. This move has sparked discussions on the true nature of the exercises, with some experts suggesting that they go beyond self-defense purposes. How do you feel about military drills as a method for countries to display strength and deter potential aggressors?
They feel unnecessary, most countries knows the strength of the US without needing to waste taxpayer dollars.

It doesn't just have to be for intimidation, it can be for training to improve teamwork.
I feel like the use of military drills can cause bigger issues and cause violence to people feeling threatened.
@9LQ5F42Republican2wks2W
It is just a way to remind those who aren't our allies that we still exist and are continually training. That we will never let our guard down.

If you lived in a region like the South China Sea with high tensions, would you support your country participating in large military drills?
I think I would if it would give us a better chance at protecting the region. I do not agree with violence but if the opponents were using it, we should protect ourselves similarly.
@9LQ4YGK2wks2W
I still think I would not support it simply because I know they haven't tried to talk to the nation before playing the who has the most weapons game.
