Bernie Sanders Introduces Amendment To Block Israel Military Funding
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders said Monday that he would put forth an amendment to remove offensive military funding for Israel from a House-passed aid package that the Senate is set to consider this week.
The amendment would “cut billions in offensive military funding to Israel from the proposed national security supplemental package,” Sanders (I-Vt.) said in a statement. The package, approved by the Republican-controlled House over the weekend, includes $17 billion in unconditional military assistance to the Israeli government, which stands accused on the world stage of perpetrating… Read more
Bernie Sanders wants to make clear that he strongly supports dumping another $61 billion into Ukraine, and he strongly supports funding SOME weapons systems for Israel, but not others. So, he opposes roughly $9 billion out of the $95 billion war bill. That's his big, bold stance
I don’t understand the left being in favor of Ukraine aid when the whole thing favors the military industrial complex which they pretend to hate and leads to more Ukrainian death as well as bringing us close to WW3. Both left for Ukraine aid and right for Israel aid are idiots
Today he says this, tomorrow he says please vote for Joe Biden.
@D3fenceBertieGreen1wk1W
Exactly. This is just for show or leverage.
No it’s policies seeing implementation.
@D3fenceBertieGreen1wk1W
Leftist Bernie has a habit of calling for a strong policy, then sacrificing it on the altar of political expediency "for the sake of assuring Biden's re-election".
@ISIDEWITH1wk1W
How do you feel about using taxpayer money to fund military actions in other countries?
@9LR5DLC1wk1W
We should only fund wars if it’s a direct threat to the U.S. or democracy.
@9LRB7RLProgressive1wk1W
We should focus on funding our country not other countries.
@9LRB8K9Independent 1wk1W
None of these are good responses as they all lack the understanding that Israel is actively committing genocide against the Palestinian people. Hamas is a "terrorist" organization, yes, but that's because Palestinians have been subjected to discrimination for decades from Israel. Israel has killed many more innocent people than Hamas has kidnapped. I agree with Sanders. Israel has enough money. (Plus, thinking that pro-Palestinians are antisemite is so wrong, no we just don't want to be complicit in an active genocide.)

Colleges Thrown Into Chaos Over Pro-Palestinian Protests
Less than a week after the arrests of more than 100 protesters at Columbia, administrators at some of the country’s most influential universities were struggling, and largely failing, to calm campuses torn by the conflict in Gaza and Israel.
The menu of options for administrators handling protests seems to be quickly dwindling. It is all but certain that the demonstrations, in some form or another, will last on some campuses until the end of the academic year, and even then, graduation ceremonies may be bitterly contested gatherings.
At New York University, the police swept in to arrest… Read more
Here's an idea. Allow students to protest what history will undoubtedly call "genocide," and exercise their right to free speech.
Only intervene in the case of violence.
All the universities in the world and all the powerful can do all they want to try to stop people from "speaking up" about this horrible terror being perpetrated in Gaza (and the West Bank).
Future historians will view those on the side of Israel's terribleland grabs in Gaza and the West Bank as collaborators who not only permitted the murder of tens of thousands of children and women but provided the weapons for the killing and destruction.
Unlike student protests against the Vietnam war in the 60s, the US isn’t at war in Gaza and Jewish Americans are not a party to this either.
So what exactly do these protestors believe they can accomplish by shutting down campus activities? Do they think that if they only protested hard enough Bibi Netanyahu would realize the errors of his ways and end the Gaza campaign?
@HopefulFoxDemocrat1wk1W
These protests are moving beyond demonstrations. When protestors are confronting staff in university offices while fully masked and unidentifiable as students (as has happened at my school), that is no longer student activism and free speech, but harassment and intimidation.
@L1bertyFerretGreen1wk1W
I agree the masks should come off. Unfortunately, adults know the outside (ie Bill Ackman) have put fear of identity into the equation with doxxing and threat to future employment for protesting oppression.
It does not seem to me that protesters are open to negotiate and to dialogue. If they want to protest, do so outside the campuses, and let other students and professors finish their works of the semester.
I wonder how many of these students are divesting their own trust funds. That would be a good start, not to mentions that many got into these Ivy Leagues only because of dad’s contributions to the endowment. Why not protest dad instead and let the serious students study in peace?
@CockyTealGreen1wk1W
Most university students take on expensive college loans to make it through. Painting Gen Z as if they're all trust-fund babies is in poor taste. Additionally, kicking out all the trouble-makers seems like you only value "smart" kids who never rock the boat.

Gaza War Puts Left Wing In Charge Of Democratic Party
For the first time in decades, possibly since the anti-Vietnam War and environmental movements, the left wing has led the center of the Democratic Party in a new political direction on a major issue — one sharply critical of the Israeli government, impatient with the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and increasingly willing to use American leverage to curb Israel’s military plans.
In recent weeks, Democratic leaders have begun inching closer to the progressive view that it is against U.S. interests to continue sending unconditional U.S. military aid to Mr. Netanyahu&… Read more
There is no democracy in this country. Our government and politicians fund wars to kill and destroy for the benefit of this nations' billionaires at the expense of the rest of us.
One of the main things that's changed is that it's now become acceptable, even fashionable, for supporters, allies and spokespeople of our country's most dangerous enemies claim that their views are pro-America while undermining our democracy.
There was a time when being against our Constitution and against honest governing was not a point of pride. Now that's gone mainstream.
The populists in the US kept them out of WWII for the first two years - leaving the fighting to be done by Europeans and the British Commonwealth (Canada, Australia, etc.). Let's hope if things go completely sideways this time, the US won't sit idly by because of the authoritarian, Putin-apologist, populists of today.
You don't have to be "pro Palestinian" to be against the murder of Palestinian civilians. The fight between Arabs and Israelis has been going on for over 60 years and will continue for who knows how many more years. But there should be an agreement to avoid inhumane actions. There is not on either side. So the rest of the world is forced to watch. Netanyahu is a large part of he problem but even without him, there doesn't seem to be a solution. Two sides of a terrible fight, many good people at the mercy of the bad ones

Victims In Gaza Mass Grave Were "Stripped Naked With Their Hands Tied."
A total of 283 bodies were recovered at Nasser Hospital, of which 42 were identified.
“Among the deceased were allegedly older people, women and wounded, while others were found tied with their hands…tied and stripped of their clothes,” said Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
“Reports suggest that there were 30 Palestinian bodies buried in two graves in the courtyard of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City; one in front of the emergency building and the others in front of the dialysis building,” Ms. Shamdasani told journalis… Read more

What emotions or thoughts does the thought of victims being stripped and tied invoke in you, especially considering some were elderly or wounded?
@9LRF8NR1wk1W
That is so wrong. That shouldn't happen to anyone.
@9LRF3BJ1wk1W
That they should probably not do that since that is inhumane.
@9LRDZYR1wk1W
First of I don't care for Muslims and they shouldn't have been in the way second of I don't care for Jews either I don't like Palestine and i don't like Israel bring back the holy land of Jerusalem!
How do they know the victims were Palestinian and not former hostages of Hamas?

World arms spending reaches $2.5 trillion
Total military spending by nations reached a record high of $2.443 trillion in 2023, according to a new report released Monday by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, or SIPRI.
Across the globe, military expenditures increased by 6.8% in real terms over 2022, the steepest rise since 2009, according to the Swedish think tank which has tracked the military spending by countries based on open sources since the 1960s. Every region saw an increase, but Europe, Asia and Oceania, and the Middle East saw the greatest growth..
“The unprecedented rise in military spending is a dire… Read more
The US military budget is roughly equivalent to the next 9 largest military budgets combined, and most of those are our allies.
For a long time now it’s been a mechanism to transfer money from citizens to high technology industry.
And nobody blinks an eye.
The trillion-dollar budget to help people survive during COVID was considered as massive excessive spending that added to supply side inflation. Explain to me how this won't add to inflation, the budget deficit and isn't excessive. It took months to get COVID relief with much debate, but this goes through with none. May as well setup auto-pay to the Pentagon with automatic increases on the taxpayers behalf. Anybody need more proof that we are a military industrial complex?
@ISIDEWITH1wk1W
Seeing the massive amounts spent by countries like the US and China on military, do you think there's a more effective way for nations to ensure their safety without escalating arms spending?
@9LR5DGF1wk1W
Yes, communication is the easiest and cheapest way to stop the wars
@9LR55HNRepublican 1wk1W
Debt is being overlooked as a whole and should be entirely looked and taken care of differently.
@ISIDEWITH1wk1W
How do you reconcile the need for national security with the potential benefits of redirecting some of that $2.5 trillion towards education, healthcare, or fighting poverty?
@9LR5J4R1wk1W
Internal social issues with people struggling with internal social issues shouldn't be the governments concern. Education, and healthcare. But poverty is always a choice determined by the person and their dedication and responsibilities. If we teach better responsibility and work ethic in schools, less would need to go on welfare, less would be clueless to the real world.
@9LR5G9D1wk1W
We should put some more money into education and healthcare but still put some into the military.

Trump Would Be "Delusional" To Ignore Threat From RFK Jr.
“They say he hurts Biden. I’m not sure that that’s true, and I think he probably hurts [us] both,” Trump said of Kennedy in a radio interview Monday night. “But he might hurt Biden a little bit more, you don’t know.”
Recent polling broadly shows Kennedy drawing evenly from both of the major party candidates’ 2020 supporters. And Kennedy’s significantly higher favorable ratings among Republican voters suggests he has more room to eat into Trump’s vote share than Biden’s.
“If the Trump campaign doesn’t see this as a… Read more

Starbucks Fights Labor Board In Supreme Court
The case before the Supreme Court began in February 2022, when Starbucks fired seven employees who were leading a unionization effort in Memphis, Tennessee. Starbucks argued the employees had violated policy by reopening the store after closing time and inviting non-employees — including a television news crew — to come inside.
The National Labor Relations Board determined the firings constituted an illegal interference with workers’ right to organize. The agency found that Starbucks had routinely allowed off-duty employees and non-employees to remain in the store after hours… Read more
