What we as a nation decide is mental illness tends to be uninformed and dangerous. Homosexuality, being gay or suspected of being gay, used to be considered a mental illness. Being trans is currently considered a mental illness. Government bodies can, and will, use this type of argument to disarm minority groups in order to gain control over the populace. They can, and will, disarm members of the LGBT community in order to control them. After that, they can, and will, use it on whatever minority group they decide is the flavor of the week mental illness. Proof of this can be seen in the 1960s gay bar raids by police, and the Stonewall riots. A woman who disagreed with her husband used to be considered mentally ill. An angry woman was labeled as hysterical and sent to the hospital. It used to be socially acceptable to send autistic children to holding houses to live their entire lives in restraint. These restrictions, would enable a return to that style of thinking, allowing women and autistic adults to be disarmed. Anxiety as a mental illness is climbing in America, especially over the last 10 years, and especially in the younger generation. This type of thinking could enable the government to refuse the second amendment from a growing number of gen Z, disarming those who are most vulnerable to government pressures. Lefthandedness used to be so unaccepted in our society that those who wrote with their left hand were deemed as something to be corrected, sinful, and in some cases mentally ill. You see how this type of argument could be used. Nearly half our populace could be disarmed due to the return of this ideolog. Disarming any member of our nation gives more control over our personhood to large government. Guns should only be kept from the hands of those who commit violent crimes.
