Whether you agree with flag burning or not, the First Amendment is supposed to protect even the speech we find offensive. It's not the government's job to decide which protests are acceptable—if we let them start there, where does it stop? As a veteran, Carey probably understands the value of freedom better than most, which makes it even more ironic he was arrested for exercising that right. This is exactly why we need to be vigilant about protecting individual liberties from government overreach.
