Congo sues Rwanda at the UN’s top court for decades of alleged atrocities
On Friday, the Democratic Republic of Congo filed a formal case against Rwanda at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
The lawsuit accuses Rwanda of orchestrating 30 years of massacres, sexual violence, and forced displacement while allegedly supporting the M23 rebel movement. While Congo seeks reparations and an order for Rwanda to cease all violations, Rwanda has consistently denied any involvement in the eastern Congo conflict.
This move opens a significant legal front in a region where conflict has claimed millions of lives and fueled severe humanitarian crises since the 1990s. Judges at the ICJ will now determine if they have jurisdiction to hear the case before potentially moving to years of legal deliberations.
