Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address a joint meeting of Congress on July 24, top Republicans announced Thursday night. The top four Congressional leaders officially invited Netanyahu to speak to lawmakers on Friday, capping off weeks of speculation regarding whether or not the prime minister would be extended the opportunity to visit the Capitol amid Israel’s war against Hamas. Netanyahu accepted the invitation on Saturday.“The bipartisan, bicameral meeting symbolizes the U.S. and Israel’s enduring relationship and will offer Prime Minister Netanyahu the opportunity to share the Israeli government’s vision for defending their democracy, combatting terror, and establishing just and lasting peace in the region,” Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in a statement Thursday night. The announcement of a date for the address excluded the names of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), both of whom signed the letter inviting Netanyahu to address Congress last week.

During a speech this week former Biden advisor Tara Reade suggested that Russophobia is “completely manufactured” by the Obama and Biden administrations, as well as the Republican Party and the military industrial complex. The whistleblower, who currently lives in Russia, argued that the entire US system has been “overtaken by the intelligence community, by the military, and companies such BlackRock, Raytheon, and LockHeed.”“The politicians in the US that should be serving the people are serving their pocketbooks and the corruption is off the roof,”Reade suggested, adding that the Biden “regime” is now moving towards “fascism and a police state” in which people are losing their freedoms. As one example, she recalled her former boss Leon Panetta, who previously served as the head of the CIA. “Now he sits on the board of Raytheon. Yet you’ll see him on MSNBC trying to talk about why we should have more weapons going to Ukraine. Well, of course he wants more weapons, because he’s personally profiting.

One challenge to his vision: Russia’s population has been in decline for years, and the war in Ukraine has made matters worse. At least 150,000 Russians are dead on the battlefield, according to Western estimates. Nearly a million fled the country after the war began. The number of births is at its lowest in more than two decades, with bigger-than-average drops in babies born in some regions closest to the fight. The Russian president has called raising the birthrate a national priority. He declared 2024 “the year of the family” and enacted subsidies for those with three or more children. Putin has pledged to spend up to $157 billion on measures to support families and children over the next six years. Russian society itself, he said, has to change, with large families becoming more common. “Motherhood is an exquisite purpose for women,” he said in an address on International Women’s Day in March. Family, he added, is “the most important thing for any woman, no matter what career path she chooses or what professional heights she attains.” The biggest single boost to Russia’s population in recent years came when the country annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, adding around 2.4 million inhabitants. Russia hasn’t included Ukrainian territories it has claimed in the war in its latest population counts.
