According to a report from Ukrainian state prosecutors, around half of the North Korean KN-23 SRBMs — also known as Hwasong-11 — that have been launched by Russia not only deviated from their trajectory but also exploded in midair.The analysis from the Ukrainian state prosecutors was based on the debris from 21 of around 50 North Korean ballistic missiles launched by Russia between late December and late February.“About half of the North Korean missiles lost their programmed trajectories and exploded in the air; in such cases, the debris was not recovered,” the office of Ukrainian state prosecutor Andriy Kostin told Reuters.North Korean-supplied missiles make up only a very small fraction of the weapons used in Russian strikes on Ukraine, but there has long been concern about the direction the burgeoning military relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang could take. As well as Russia unlocking another source of SRBMs and much-needed artillery projectiles, there have been additional concerns that Russian expertise in the development of ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons — as well as other weapons and technologies — could be provided to North Korea.The Ukrainian analysis points to the last recorded use of a KN-23 on February 27, after which the stocks of around 50 KN-23s delivered to Russia were exhausted.

If so, the U.S. would be expected to stop sending Israel military assistance.But the report won’t be finished by Wednesday, said the aides, granted anonymity to discuss internal communications. In an email, the Biden administration notified the Hill that it will miss the date — without providing a clear reason why.The email said the report is “briefly delayed,” but doesn’t provide a specific timeline.That’s more definitive than the message from State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller to reporters on Tuesday afternoon. He said that the report wasn’t yet finished, but added: “We are trying very hard to meet that deadline … It’s possible it slips just a little bit, but we are trying to get it done by tomorrow.” Miller noted that the deadline was a self-imposed one rather than a requirement.Asked why the report is delayed, the National Security Council deferred to State. The State Department didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

A bipartisan group of senators is pushing to halt the expansion of facial recognition technology at airports in the United States and restrict its use as part of the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill that is making its way through Congress. The proposal has pitted privacy advocates in both parties against consumer and industry groups that argue that the technology has the potential to vastly cut down on wait times at airports and increase convenience and safety.Under a plan from the Transportation Security Administration, the government would expand facial recognition technology to more than 430 airports, from 25, as part of an effort to speed up the check-in process. If facial recognition software is not expanded, the travel lobby says, passengers will end up waiting an additional 120 million hours in security lines each year. Senator Merkley rejected the criticism, pointing out that his amendment would merely preserve the status quo.“How does this create a delay? We’re just freezing in place what’s there right now,” he said. “We think it’s an important issue for Congress to wrestle with.”Senator Kennedy said he was particularly concerned that government workers could potentially abuse the data after scanning millions of faces each day. A spokeswoman for the T.S.A., said photographs were not stored or saved after a positive ID match, “except in a limited testing environment for evaluation of the effectiveness of the technology.” She also said the agency would not use the technology for surveillance or any law enforcement purpose.
