The conflict between Moscow and Kiev should end with the defeat and breakup of the Russian Federation, Estonia’s Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has said.Kallas offered the suggestion on Saturday during a debate which was part of the 17th Lennart Meri Conference in the country’s capital, Tallinn, dedicated to supporting Ukraine."Russia’s defeat is not a bad thing because then you know there could really be a change in society,” the prime minister argued. She argued that the Russian Federation is comprised of “many different nations” and suggested that they should become separate states after the end of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev."I think if you would have more like small nations... it is not a bad thing if the big power is actually [made] much smaller,” Kallas argued. The Constitution of the Russian Federation describes it as a multinational state. According to the 2020-2021 census, the country’s population speaks 155 different languages, with Russian being the most common.

Russian military personnel have entered an air base in Niger that is hosting U.S. troops, a senior U.S. defense official told Reuters, a move that follows a decision by Niger's junta to expel U.S. forces. The military officers ruling the West African nation have told the U.S. to withdraw its nearly 1,000 military personnel from the country, which until a coup last year had been a key partner for Washington's fight against insurgents who have killed thousands of people and displaced millions more.A senior U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Russian forces were not mingling with U.S. troops but were using a separate hangar at Airbase 101, which is next to Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger's capital. The move by Russia's military, which Reuters was the first to report, puts U.S. and Russian troops in close proximity at a time when the nations' military and diplomatic rivalry is increasingly acrimonious over the conflict in Ukraine.

France, Belgium and Slovenia released statements supporting the world’s top war crimes court and its chief prosecutor’s request for arrest warrants for leaders of Israel and Hamas, after Israel and the United States both harshly condemned the effort. The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and three Hamas leaders — Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh — of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip and Israel. While Netanyahu and Gallant do not face imminent arrest, the announcement Monday was a symbolic blow that deepened Israel’s isolation over the war in Gaza.

Much of Iran’s air fleet is in dire need of spare parts that Tehran has been unable to buy due to US and other western sanctions.“Iran’s air fleet is a metaphor for the regime as a whole,” said Ali Ansari, founder of the Institute of Iranian Studies at the University of St Andrews. “It’s old, should not be able to keep flying, and yet does — until it doesn’t.”Tehran has yet to give an official explanation for the crash. The likely culprit is an aging fleet, battered by decades of wear and tear. Blocked for years by western sanctions on Iranian institutions and export controls on aerospace goods, Iran has been thwarted in efforts to renew its fleet or access spare parts and maintenance contracts.Much of Iran’s air force is even older than its civilian fleet and combines decades-old US aircraft, many of them bought in the 1970s, with Soviet-made planes and a few airworthy French Mirage F1s.

Europe must create its own Israel-style Iron Dome to protect against missile and drone attack, the prime minister of Poland has said.Donald Tusk said he and other leaders would propose plans for the £3.4 billion European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI) to the European Council and Commission “in a few days”.“Creating an iron dome against missiles and drones is necessary,” he said on Monday.“The recent attack on Israel showed how essential such systems are. There is no reason for Europe not to have its missile defence shield.”The Iron Dome was crucial in ensuring Iran’s April attack on Israel, with about 300 missiles and drones, caused no significant damage.Mr Tusk said Europe was in a danger zone, just like Israel. He said it did not take much imagination to work out where an attack could come from, in a veiled reference to Russia. In November 2022, a missile struck a Polish village close to the Ukrainian border, killing two people.
