It could be harmful depending on the person and what they could do as well as kids could find it and possibly hurt themselves

 @9G46HNKDemocrat  from California  agreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers absolutely should not be able to carry guns at school. Guns should not be on campus whatsoever and by promoting teachers to keep these in school where all of the students are send the wrong message. Also, there's nothing stopping any student to take it from the teacher and wrongly use a firearm. This should be a non-negotiable term and the fact that every school in America is afraid of gun violence and school shootings provides more to the fact that there should be no guns on campus. Ever.

 @B9KBSG3  from Kansas  agreed…4mos4MO

While the idea of arming teachers may seem like a proactive measure for school safety, the potential risks far outweigh the benefits. Research indicates that the presence of firearms in schools can escalate conflicts and increase the likelihood of accidental shootings, putting students and staff in greater danger. According to a 2021 study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, schools with armed personnel saw a 50% increase in gun-related incidents.

Additionally, the introduction of firearms in an educational setting can undermine the learning environment, creating a sense of fear…  Read more

Armed teachers can pose a threat to students as it is very easy to shoot students and staff in a school and can also distract the learning environment in the school if students know that a gun is present in the classroom, especially if they are young and do not understand the context of the situation.

 @B8TM4SK  from Kansas  agreed…6mos6MO

Teachers are not police officers or the military, school should be a gun free place. Safety measurements should prevent all guns from coming inside, not bring more weapons in.

 @B8JMNZ3  from Texas  agreed…6mos6MO

Teachers' jobs are to provide education, not protection. Proper surveillance and police protection should be increased to keep our schools safe.

 @9GYTGHDIndependence  from Pennsylvania  agreed…3yrs3Y

A child could hurt themself with the firearm, a teacher could go mad and shoot any misbehaving students or staff members, and police stations should just be put closer to schools.

 @B8SJB3CWomen’s Equality  from Michigan  agreed…6mos6MO

Having armed teachers is one of the worst ideas every. Anything can happen. School is supposed to be a safe place for children and young adults to learn and make friends and keeping a gun in classrooms strips those children of their safe place. A student could steal that for themselves and hurt anyone.

 @9GDH2F8 from Guam  agreed…3yrs3Y

Arming teachers is a contentious and potentially dangerous approach to school security. The data suggests that most teachers lack the necessary training and expertise, and the presence of firearms in schools can create a fearful and stressful environment for both students and educators. There are documented cases of accidents and negligence involving armed personnel in schools, and alternative, less risky measures should be considered to enhance school safety.

Creating an environment with more guns closer to students, even in the name of safety, will only increase tension, lessen students sense of genuine safety & belonging, and create situations where bad actors can easily acquire weapons from within a campus.

 @B8YZ627 from Pennsylvania  agreed…6mos6MO

its not the job of a teacher to insure students are safe from mass shooters and terrorists. its the job of government and LEO's. funding a police presence in every school in america is key to preventing mass shootings / domestic terror attacks.

 @B99JGF2  from Michigan  agreed…5mos5MO

It could be used for protection, but it may not be used for the right reason. All parents would have to be comfortable with their child in the same classroom as an adult with a gun, and statistically, everyone's lives are threatened significantly when there is a gun involved or around.

 @9G38PRQ  from Idaho  agreed…3yrs3Y

According to the Giffords Law Center, the presence of firearms in schools can actually increase the risk of accidents involving firearms. In the U.S. unintentional shootings involving children are sadly common. One average, there are hundreds of unintentional shootings by children, often involving firearms that are NOT securely stored. Arming teachers might lead younger students to become more curious, and we all know curiosity killed the cat.

 @BCL4ZZT  from Florida  agreed…2mos2MO

Even among teachers who own guns, 63% reported they would not want to carry them in a school setting: A 2023 RAND Corporation survey found that 54% of K-12 teachers believe arming staff would make schools less safe, while only 20% believe it would improve safety. A Gallup poll revealed that 73% of teachers oppose carrying guns in schools, and only 18% would be personally willing to do so.

 @B8T7SHJ  from Iowa  agreed…6mos6MO

Real incidents show that adding guns increases everyday risk:

In a 5-year period, there were nearly 100 publicly reported mishandled gun incidents in schools involving teachers, staff, or school resource officers (SROs). These included guns left unattended, dropped, or accidentally fired.

Between 2012 and the late 2010s, campuses saw at least 22 accidental shootings involving armed staff or officers. These incidents resulted in injuries to students, teachers, and officers.

A long-term review found 30 firearm discharges by educators from 1980–2012, and more than 70% resulted in someone bein…  Read more

I believe teachers should not ne allowed to have arms in a classroom in case of a sudden outburst of a student that may caus ethe teacher to feel extrememly irritated and want to cause harm to that student.

 @BBNJ2W5  from Oregon  agreed…3mos3MO

There are documented cases of teachers’ guns being misplaced, stolen, or accidentally discharged. For example, a teacher's gun discharged in a school bathroom, and a California teacher's gun fired during a safety demonstration.

 @BBG55MM  from Maine  agreed…3mos3MO

putting guns in schools is a issue that we have ben dealing with for years and haveing all teachers armed is a disaster in waiting

 @9GBMQNQ  from California  agreed…3yrs3Y

Studies and statistics have shown that people are more likely to be shot, by committing suicide, accidental reasons or murder when guns are freely around and available for use.

 @B9WCHG7  from Maryland  agreed…4mos4MO

We want to reduce shootings, but the solution should be removing the guns, not just trying to overpower the issue. Guns have NO place near a child, and bringing them into schools and making them normal just risks more shootings because it makes guns normal and present in the eyes of newer generations.

 @B5N7GHN from Washington  agreed…1yr1Y

Teachers are not trained, physically nor emotionally to open fire on a student. The risks of having untrained staff armed, guns potentially unsecured in reach of students, the risk of teachers themselves being mentally unwell and turning their guns on the students or other staff or parents is all too huge. There should be no guns in classrooms.

 @9GHZR36Democrat  from California  agreed…3yrs3Y

Kids could find ways to access the firearms and it could cause more damage than good. While children are at school there shouldn't be a worry that their teacher could go crazy and decide to harm them.

 @9GQRQGRProgressive from Indiana  agreed…3yrs3Y

Increasing the prevalence of firearms will not solve the issue of mass shootings, no matter who is armed. Weapons that can be used for mass murder should not be so readily accessible and poorly regulated. No other developed nation has this problem on the level of the United States. It's the guns.

 @BCNJW5Z  from New Jersey  agreed…2mos2MO

This give shooters a way to get access to a firearm from within the building, especially considering it is not unrealistic for an older high school student to overpower a teacher for long enough to steal their gun.

 @B7X42CZNo Labels  from North Carolina  agreed…7mos7MO

Yes, that is why in a lot of schools there are cops in the building to have trained professionals there to deal with issues.

 @B7988DM from Virginia  agreed…8mos8MO

I may not have numbers but I do understand people and you can not trust them with something that can kill people just because they are ok one second does not mean they will be forever.

 @9GQYKZKagreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers can be irresponsible about handling a gun and may injure themselves or someone else. We can't forget the possibility of a student accessing the weapon that the teacher has either.

 @9H4YG4DPeace and Freedom from Maryland  agreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers should not feel the need to have a gun. Children and teachers should simple feel safe at there school.

 @B7YYM94  from New Hampshire  agreed…7mos7MO

Teachers don't need to be armed during the school day. Instead there should be higher security measures installed in school buildings.

 @9GX65JH from Ohio  agreed…3yrs3Y

It could be harmful depending on the person and what they could do as well and kids could find it and possibly hurt themselves or others.

 @9FNFJW2 from Missouri  agreed…3yrs3Y

Idiots with guns get people killed. Plenty of folks are injured or even die while deer hunting or cleaning their firearm. These things are a fact of life, but for the love of god let's not let idiots bring their guns to school.

 @B7NCK4VIndependent from Maryland  agreed…8mos8MO

As this may be a public concern of School shootings, it is best to have no guns that teachers have access to. This can help reduce gun violence because we don't know anyone's intentions of harming others or protecting themselves. No matter the reason, teachers should not be armed with weapons of any kind unless a situation requires them to provide self-defense.

 @9FV8SYL from Georgia  agreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers should not feel the need to have a gun. Children and teachers should simple feel safe at there school becasue it is well guarded and the goverment made regulations that promises gun holders are safe.

 @9GYB9VJ from North Carolina  agreed…3yrs3Y

Well lets say this was real and a teacher has their gun just laying out in a class and a student comes and takes it, this student now has a higher power. Also most shootings happen in schools with kids so having teachers carry guns would not be that much of a help.

 @9GHYG5Y from Washington  agreed…3yrs3Y

Assault and assault-style weapons need to be banned as well as high-capacity magazines because there is no good reason to own a weapon of this type.

 @9GR49DG from California  agreed…3yrs3Y

The root cause of gun violence is the lack of a proper gun restriction policy. By giving teachers more guns, it is worsening the problem, and increasing the amount of fatal firearms that can be used to take lives. The only way to solve gun violence is to decrease total amount of firearm access to everyone.

 @9GVVRMW from Pennsylvania  agreed…3yrs3Y

I think that school officers should be the only ones that carry guns, but depending on the size of the school there should be at least three trained officers patrolling the school.

 @9GR3KTJ from Idaho  agreed…3yrs3Y

Having teachers armed could lead to more threats by the teachers if the students are acting out. For one the teachers who are getting guns the government probably won't do background checks on the teachers so in perspective, you could just be giving a gun to a formal criminal or since you're just giving it to the teacher maybe it would make a criminal. Another huge thing is if the students get ahold of it. To actually just prevent school shootings there needs to be a strict gun law.

 @9H8PP6X from Alabama  agreed…3yrs3Y

Leave the protection to security and police rather than teachers that have access to kids. Don't let them also have access to a gun within their own classroom.

 @9GZZMPCIndependent from Georgia  agreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers should not be allowed guns on school property due to the moral implications of GUNS and the thousands of possibilites of what could happen with said gun.

 @9FT653HLibertarian from Virginia  agreed…3yrs3Y

With an increase in the number of guns in the hands of citizens, there have been an increase in the number of school shootings. Like in VA, there was a child who got ahold of his parents' gun and shot his teacher. It is likely that the same thing would happen if a school teacher were to have a gun in a school environment.

 @9FQZQRP from Massachusetts  agreed…3yrs3Y

the U.S, which has the highest concentration of guns in the world, also has the most shootings in general, and countries which have much lower concentrations of guns, such as Australia, have almost no mass shootings at all.

 @9GV4BJ6 from Minnesota  agreed…3yrs3Y

According to ACLU West Virginia University "... Arming teachers won't make our kids any safer. Armed school personnel do not lead to lower rates of violence. In fact, several recent mass shootings occurred in places where armed police officers – who have much more training than an armed history teacher -- were on duty." (Jan 25, 2023)

 @9FRMYJSLibertarian from Washington  agreed…3yrs3Y

I think that a specialized individual who is trained by the government on how to use a gun safely should be allowed and I encourage them to carry.

 @9H39R47 from Virginia  agreed…3yrs3Y

A teacher's job is to teach, not police the school. Asking teachers to take on the responsibility of carrying a weapon around children/defense would put undue burden on them.

 @9FTHC5B from California  agreed…3yrs3Y

arming teachers could increase the risk of accidents and errors, lacks adequate training, affects the school environment and there are more effective alternatives according to statistics and opinions of school safety experts

 @9GQQNBS from Tennessee  agreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers should not bring guns because they can get there gun stolen or they can end up putting it down somewhere and a kid can find it.

 @9GTZF95Peace and Freedom from Kentucky  agreed…3yrs3Y

A Teacher could possibly lose control, lose track of thought, become aggressive, any accident could happen.

 @9GQWMYG from California  agreed…3yrs3Y

Again if there is a serious, life-threatening fight on campus the principal could pull out the firearm on those students. Even if it is life threatening it should not go that far to stop the fight. What is that gonna teach those kids? How are the students around, watching the fight gonna feel? And their parents?

 @9GZKZ43 from Alabama  agreed…3yrs3Y

No teacher I have would be open to the idea of shooting a child, the argument of "just arm teachers with guns too" is a deflection from actual the problems at play like gun culture, mental illness, and the accessibility of automatic weapons.

 @9GXBKQT from South Carolina  agreed…3yrs3Y

they shouldn't have guns because that leaves students in threat of danger by the teachers. It is just making schools unsafe and only police officers should have guns in a school setting.

 @9GQPRTH from Kentucky  agreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers are supposed to teach their students, not to be trained to have to kill a threat. They did not sign up to have the possibility to have to kill someone and instead the government should put more effort into creating more restrictions on guns and having a faster response for when a school is under lock-down, because the numbers are way to high for these officers to be responding so slowly. And besides, the answers above apply. Just because one is a teacher, does not mean that they cannot use that gun in a horrible manner, creating an easier access for someone to gain a weapon and fire it within a classroom or a school. Or a student to come across that weapon and fire it at others or accidentally at themself. Teachers are licenced to teach, not to kill.

 @9GTTST7 from Illinois  agreed…3yrs3Y

If there are firearms present at a school, the risk of shootings will skyrocket. Whether it be from a student getting their hands on it or a teacher who had enough. If we can follow the safety regulations present in schools now, the risk will be much lower and less casualties will occur in the long run.

 @9H27939 from Missouri  agreed…3yrs3Y

i dont think they shoud carry guns but maybe have more security and cameras to make sure students are safe

 @9GVZDGZPeace and Freedom from Tennessee  agreed…3yrs3Y

Adding more guns is like adding more wood to suffocate a fire it makes no sense to begin with removing guns from the equation or limiting them makes more sense

 @9FT7VX7Progressive from California  agreed…3yrs3Y

Arming teachers won't make our kids any safer. Filling our schools with more weapons can only lead to one thing: guns falling into the wrong hands.

 @9GPYST6 from California  agreed…3yrs3Y

in context, only guards should be able to be armed especially in schools since teachers are liable for their classroom and could take advantage of their weapons.

 @9GTGGH6 from Oregon  agreed…3yrs3Y

Even though the teacher is defenseless, They still have objects around them. Teachers should be able to defend themselves if something does happen, but should not be given something to tempt them.

 @9GSJG7X from North Carolina  agreed…3yrs3Y

I am a student and I would feel very uncomfortable and unsafe is all teachers carried a gun at school.

 @9H4S6VW from Michigan  agreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers shouldn't have to carry guns because school shootings shouldn't be this common in the first place.

 @9H3F7ST from Idaho  agreed…3yrs3Y

There is no reason for teachers to be allowed to carry guns at school. Even with training (which will cost millions of dollars), it is still dangerous and unneeded. I believe that if this becomes a possibility we will see thousands of parents withdraw their children from public schools and thousands of teachers leave their jobs. There are many other alternatives to increasing safety inside public schools: SROs, cameras, ID only entrances, etc. So again, there is no need to have teachers carry any type of concealed weapon.

 @9H38KPG from Pennsylvania  agreed…3yrs3Y

According to Rand Corporation, 54% of teachers believed that arming teachers would create a LESS safe school environment.

 @9GWFG4Rfrom Guam  agreed…3yrs3Y

If teachers are armed then it is easier to access guns which will lead to further violence. More guns isn’t the solution to mass shootings and this makes guns easier for students to get guns.

 @9GVNBLT from New York  agreed…3yrs3Y

"research by the Giffords Law Center found that between 2014 and 2018, there were at least 66 incidents involving firearms in schools, including incidents where armed personnel, including teachers, accidentally discharged their weapons or left them unattended."

 @9GSG77L from California  agreed…3yrs3Y

If a teacher was armed, not only is it bad for the teacher if something goes wrong but if a student manages to get their hands on it too.

 @9FRZBRXPeace and Freedom from South Carolina  agreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers are meant to teach students about world problems and history and subject of education related things they should not have access to guns because that may more than likely not feel protected and want to leave school or students could get their hands on them and hurt themselves and/or others.

 @9FRJRSK from Nevada  agreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers should not be armed because people never know what their certain intentions are with a weapon. Man

 @9FQJS8K from Texas  agreed…3yrs3Y

Schools is no place for harm, these students are the future of American as we know it. They deserve to learn and make friends without the fear of a school shooter.

 @B7YDQ2Q from New York  agreed…7mos7MO

 @9H8BMC3 from Nebraska  agreed…3yrs3Y

Children shouldn't be around that and its unsafe especially with mental instability in the US to let someone have a gun in a room where the door locks fro the insde is unsafe and would make children nervous an anxious

 @9FV4FF4 from Texas  agreed…3yrs3Y

Found written by a teacher themselves: "First, when a gun is in the classroom, students can get access to it. There have been multiple incidents of students and teachers finding misplaced firearms: in bathrooms, locker rooms, even sporting events."

 @9FSNYZ9Democrat from Missouri  agreed…3yrs3Y

There have been many instances were teachers have brought guns to schools, such as pistols, and have had misfirings, and have not been safe. There is no way that when a teacher is in a dire situation, that there are able to do the correct thing, a hundred percent of the time

 @9FS5XGZDemocratagreed…3yrs3Y

There is nothing that shows teachers carry weapons would be beneficial in a critical emergency. We are busy caring for our students. There is no proof that this offers protection. There are SRO's in schools and this is not always the answer.

 @9FLQS96 from Ohio  agreed…3yrs3Y

allowing guns inside school premises is just asking for an even bigger increase in gun violence than instead of increasing security throughout the school

 @9GXTJDP from Illinois  agreed…3yrs3Y

 @9FRGVNJDemocrat from Illinois  agreed…3yrs3Y

57% of students fear gun violence at school. Increasing the number of weapons allowed at school makes it worse.

 @9FP6T93Democrat from New York  agreed…3yrs3Y

If teachers are armed, they might accidentally hurt or kill someone or they might abuse their power to carry weapons in school which can cause students and others to be frightened.

 @9GYKQGBIndependent from New Jersey  agreed…3yrs3Y

Schools instruct teachers/classrooms on how to provide shelter if a school in on lockdown. Teachers are not security officers and the police should be trained to handle those kinds of situations.

 @9GYG5KQRepublican from Tennessee  agreed…3yrs3Y

Personally, I’d rather have the trained professionals handle the firearms in the school and the less is best.

 @9GV3M4G from Maryland  agreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers do have to go through 30-40 hours of training to have the weapon. However, the students don't have this training, and if the gun gets into the hands of the wrong person it could cause a lot of death and destruction.

 @9GSZRNM from Ohio  agreed…3yrs3Y

There have been many situations where kids have found their parents guns and harmed themselves or others, why would we then give children that possibility at school as well?

 @B79GDVB from Illinois  agreed…8mos8MO

 @9GRS4X3Women’s Equality from Pennsylvania  agreed…3yrs3Y

 @9GR8468 from Idaho  agreed…3yrs3Y

More guns are not the solution to the shootings. It will only lead to more shootings and deaths. Only armed professionals should be allowed to hold a gun.

 @9GYN6X8Independent from Texas  agreed…3yrs3Y

It is a mental health issue. Better mental health programs would prevent or atleast catch school shooters.

 @9FNTG8Z from Nevada  agreed…3yrs3Y

In the article "Four reasons why arming school teachers won't make schools safer" it states in paragraph 4 that "Studies show people are much more likely to be shot, either by suicide, accident, or homicide, when guns are more readily available."

 @9GYSXY8 from Texas  agreed…3yrs3Y

they should not be armed because a child could find the firearm and hurt himself or others purposefully or non purposefully

 @9GYSQ7P from Texas  agreed…3yrs3Y

The qualifications to be a good teacher have nothing to do with demonstrating appropriate gun safety, response to armed shooters, or reactions to life and death situations. Allowing teachers to carry guns implies they are qualified to respond to a life-threatening event, which is beyond the scope of their job. Further, having a gun in a classroom increases the odds a child will be able to accidentally access that gun.

 @9H2CS4M from New Hampshire  agreed…3yrs3Y

Arming teaching is insane! This stupid “political” point came from the growing issue of gun violence in the US, especially US schools. More regulations (as the 2nd amendment also requires a “well regulated militia”) is needed. How can former criminals who have paid their debt to society have the right to still bare arms but not vote? How come there is pretty much nothing that can take away someone’s “right” to own a gun but that does not apply to anything else. More regulation is what’s needed! Not guns for teachers.

 @9FXFSGDPeace and Freedom from California  agreed…3yrs3Y

To better protect our children we should not allow teachers to arm themselves. Children are very observing and might be drawn to guns by being around them in school.

 @9GRWKQ2 from Arizona  agreed…3yrs3Y

I believe classrooms and schools should have more security, and safety resources to prevent from break-ins.

 @9GH8QCXDemocrat from Florida  agreed…3yrs3Y

Teachers jobs are to teach, not to defend. Having that many guns in school is an accident waiting to happen. It is giving children access to guns everyday.

 @B5M94R3No Labels  from New York  agreed…1yr1Y

Teachers can use fire extinguishers as weapons, spray the floor, eyes of the attacker, and hit them with it. Wrestle them for their weapon. You can overpower them with everyday objects.
