Disinformation is a huge problem in our day, and social media plays a large role in that. I think that people should be informed on world affairs, but they should be cautious and not belive everything they read. People need to be taught to examine the truth of any given report or social media post because they are often untrue.

The double standard is so clear. Israel can level entire neighborhoods, can assassinate journalists and their families, can shoot at and bomb aide workers and it’s all good.

Sanctions seem most often to be a means for politicians to score points by posing as strong leaders. Of course, such theater is essential if you want to succeed as a politician and especially for the commander and chief. We seem to want a king... but one we can dismiss when we tire of them.
At any rate, it is hard to see where sanctions have achieved much success unless there is a rapid positive response. When they don't work the first time, tightening sanctions tends to hurt the people but not to threaten autocrats.
Sanctions of Russia have been an abject failure but at least the Russian people aren't suffering serious consequences-
whether that's good or bad. In Venezuela we are hurting the innocent people and not the dictator, apparently. As long as he can siphon enough money to the military he's good to go.

I agree that regime change will have to come from Venezuelans, but there aren’t many signs that this will happen any time soon. The US government offered relief in exchange for some minimal concessions to give the democratic opposition a chance. Maduro reneged. Now, backtracking and not reimposing the sanctions would be a present to Maduro’s dictatorship and a slap on the face of those fighting for a return to democracy.
China buys two thirds of Venezuela's oil exports. The United States doesn't need any oil from Venezuela. As far as debt and borrowing, Venezuela is a risky investment.
The desire for change has to come from within the country.

Biden should be applauded for his efforts to make the U.S. competitive in the emerging, green technologies of the future and hold China to fair trade practices, you can't place the blame solely on China "cheating" the system.

Congress under the Democrats (with their full control) refused to take up immigration reform, tariff reform, wage and tax reform and medical/healthcare reform.
The DO-NOTHING CONGRESS is composed of those that want to maintain power.
We will never get “fair competition “ from China since the latter never plays by the rules. They are in the process of boosting manufacturing as a means to restore China’s economic growth without regard to profitability and are, instead, in the process of flooding international markets with cheap goods that will undermine homegrown manufacturing in many countries, including this one.
China must be an exception to the normal rules of free trade if we are to maintain a decent manufacturing base for clean energy, green transportation and other essential industries. Biden is right to impose tariffs no matter what the free trade purists say.
The US cheats far more on international trade than China does. Indeed, it is the US that has been holding up the WTO because the US only wants "free trade" on its terms. The WTO also ruled in favor of China and the US did not like that. So, like the spoiled child with the ball, the US is trying to wreck the whole system. Fortunately, the rest of the world is still open to trading and benefiting from it.

It's not free trade when the major exporters on the Chinese side are either state-owned or backed by state-owned banks.
The danger is that they initially sell abroad at a loss to destroy non-Chinese competitors, and then threaten to cut off access to those cheap exports in order to pressure other countries into acquiescing to their foreign-policy agenda.

I am old enough to remember when "scientists" predicted that the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia was doomed, dying and would soon be a thing of the past. Guaranteed.
However, a funny thing happened to that prediction. It turned out to be totally wrong. In fact as of 2022, the coral now covers 34% of the sea floor, double what it was as recently as 2012 and covers a greater area than in 1985.
Coral lives and dies. It dies from hurricanes and starfish plagues as well as sudden bleaching events. But, surprise , surprise it grows back.

The continental shelves used to be forests of sponges and corals, critical habitat for fish development.
Trawling has reduced to mud, to parking lot, a greater area of the ocean floor than the area of forests cut down in the history of humanity.
Over hunting and fishing, habitat loss, invasive species, pollution and now climate change.
None of these things happen in a vacuum, but there are synergies among them which make the whole vastly greater than the sum of the parts.

Would you be willing to pay more for an electric vehicle if you knew it was significantly better for the environment, despite potential issues with reliability and repair costs?
I think that it would be better if the future of electric vehicles improved, and by improving I mean that the quality of their batteries would be better and their cost would be the one of an average vehicle and not overpriced. I would totally be willing to pay for an electric car knowing that it helps the environment and is cheap and the battery lasts a lot.

Gaza's IVF embryos destroyed by Israeli strike
When an Israeli shell struck Gaza's largest fertility clinic in December, the explosion blasted the lids off five liquid nitrogen tanks stored in a corner of the embryology unit.
