Israel Censors International Journalists From Covering Gaza

Though international media workers rushed to Israel (it has granted accreditation to at least 2,800 correspondents since the war started), none have been allowed into Gaza except on a handful of tightly controlled tours led by the Israeli military. As a result, for the past six months, the world has been almost entirely reliant on the reporting of local Palestinian journalists for on-site information about the impact of the war — along with mostly unverified social media posts that have flooded the information space since its start.

The refusal to allow international media to cover Gaza…  Read more

What impact do you think social media plays in shaping our perception of conflicts when traditional journalism is restricted?

 @9LN4L4J from Illinois answered…1mo1MO

They will only tell us what we want to hear, they won't tell us every detail like they should.

 @9LN4LBC from Colorado answered…1mo1MO

Disinformation is a huge problem in our day, and social media plays a large role in that. I think that people should be informed on world affairs, but they should be cautious and not belive everything they read. People need to be taught to examine the truth of any given report or social media post because they are often untrue.

 @9LN4F5L from California answered…1mo1MO

 @9LN49F9 from Utah answered…1mo1MO

Definitely makes me even more upset at Israel and even more distrustful. If they truly think they're doing something good, they wouldn't have anything to hide and it's so frustrating to see the merciless genocide that Israel is doing to Palestinians.

 @JerkyAuroraGreen from Illinois commented…1mo1MO

The double standard is so clear. Israel can level entire neighborhoods, can assassinate journalists and their families, can shoot at and bomb aide workers and it’s all good.

10/7 was horrific and the perpetrators deserve justice. Don’t use it as an excuse to erase a whole population.

 @C1vilRightsPoultrySocialist from Texas agreed…1mo1MO

I see no compelling national interest for us to be so closely associated with Israel.

The US-Israel relationship is so lopsided:

They get the money, weapons, and the diplomatic cover.

We get the bill and the blowback from around the world. And we get spied on by our 'ally'.

 @Minarchist-08Libertarian from Washington commented…1mo1MO

Good thing that's nothing WE would ever do in our United States, where we have a first Amendment protecting freedom of speech ... oh wait, looks like the feds have been doing that for *YEARS*!

 @LardJasmineAmerican Solidarity from Indiana commented…1mo1MO

Not only have the Israelis basically banned journalists & news outlets from Gaza (& the West Bank for that matter), unless tightly controlled & imbedded with the IDF; they have killed well over 100 journalists. Some reports say 200.

It is obvious why, so they can lie about every controversial incident. Like opening fire on starving people just trying to get food, killing children & shooting journalists. Which they have been caught lying about many times. ... This country is out of control .. It is everything we are supposed to be against. Yet we support it 100%. It is sickening

U.S. Sanctions On Venezuela Backfire

U.S. officials are concerned that reverting to Trump-era sanctions that accelerated the decline of Venezuela’s oil production would raise the price of gas at U.S. pumps and prompt more migration from Venezuela as President Biden campaigns for re-election in November. Restricting Western oil companies would tighten global energy supplies and open the way for Chinese investment in Venezuela, they say.

Biden administration officials have said they didn’t think that the oil sanctions—leveled against Venezuela in early 2019 in former President Donald Trump’s effort to force…  Read more

Why is it so difficult to admit that Communism is the root of the problem?

 @Minarchist-08Libertarian from Washington corrected…1mo1MO

Communism is a form of anarchism without private property. Socialism is absolute government control, and Communists view it as necessary to get to Communist Classless Anarchy. There has never been a communist nation in history – only socialist ones. Which, if you think about it, should make you hate the Left even more – they are philosophically in agreement with Joseph Stalin.

Can economic sanctions ever be justified if they lead to worsening humanitarian crises in the targeted country?

 @9LN6JCBRepublican  from Texas answered…1mo1MO

You can't form an authentic opinion based on a headline. That is the problem with modern media.

 @OatmealBrooklynLibertarian from Texas commented…1mo1MO

Biden is so serious about "democracy not dying in dictatorships", he is sanctioning Maduro again... just exempting oil and energy companies from the sanctions because he has elections to win

 @EmptyChileSocialist from Washington commented…1mo1MO

I agree that regime change will have to come from Venezuelans, but there aren’t many signs that this will happen any time soon. The US government offered relief in exchange for some minimal concessions to give the democratic opposition a chance. Maduro reneged. Now, backtracking and not reimposing the sanctions would be a present to Maduro’s dictatorship and a slap on the face of those fighting for a return to democracy.

Chinese Imports Are A "Direct Threat" to Biden's Agenda

Unions, manufacturing groups and some economists say the administration may need to do much more to restrict Chinese imports if it hopes to ensure that Mr. Biden’s vast industrial initiatives are not swamped by lower-cost Chinese versions of the same emerging technologies.

“It is a very clear and present danger, because the industrial policy of the Biden administration is largely focused on not the traditional low-skill, low-wage manufacturing, but new, high-tech manufacturing,” said Eswar Prasad, a Cornell University economist who specializes in trade policies.

“Those…  Read more

Biden should be applauded for his efforts to make the U.S. competitive in the emerging, green technologies of the future and hold China to fair trade practices, you can't place the blame solely on China "cheating" the system.

They put vast amounts of government resources into investing in high-speed rail, solar panels, EVs and battery storage, and now they are miles ahead in terms of infrastructure and technology - it's smart, foresighted industrial policy that has a long game.

Meanwhile, the U.S Congress seems to be more and more interested in banning books, impeaching…  Read more

Congress under the Democrats (with their full control) refused to take up immigration reform, tariff reform, wage and tax reform and medical/healthcare reform.

The DO-NOTHING CONGRESS is composed of those that want to maintain power.

 @SealBertDemocrat from South Carolina commented…1mo1MO

We will never get “fair competition “ from China since the latter never plays by the rules. They are in the process of boosting manufacturing as a means to restore China’s economic growth without regard to profitability and are, instead, in the process of flooding international markets with cheap goods that will undermine homegrown manufacturing in many countries, including this one.

China must be an exception to the normal rules of free trade if we are to maintain a decent manufacturing base for clean energy, green transportation and other essential industries. Biden is right to impose tariffs no matter what the free trade purists say.

 @MorbidPr0porti0nalVeteran from New York disagreed…1mo1MO

The US cheats far more on international trade than China does. Indeed, it is the US that has been holding up the WTO because the US only wants "free trade" on its terms. The WTO also ruled in favor of China and the US did not like that. So, like the spoiled child with the ball, the US is trying to wreck the whole system. Fortunately, the rest of the world is still open to trading and benefiting from it.

 @ISIDEWITHasked…1mo1MO

Do you believe restricting imports from China is fair if it protects American jobs and industries?

 @9LMYKVPIndependent from New Hampshire commented…1mo1MO

yes because china and america aren't the best of friends china is anti communist and we donr like that yet we are their biggest consumer

 @C0al1tionAbaloneConstitution from West Virginia commented…1mo1MO

Free trade when we are selling. Tariffs when they are selling. It will fuel inflation and hurt the very people Biden is trying to woo. Economics decision are bad when based on nationalism.

 @CynicalWaspGreenfrom New Jersey disagreed…1mo1MO

It's not free trade when the major exporters on the Chinese side are either state-owned or backed by state-owned banks.

The danger is that they initially sell abroad at a loss to destroy non-Chinese competitors, and then threaten to cut off access to those cheap exports in order to pressure other countries into acquiescing to their foreign-policy agenda.

Russia asks United Nations to consider sanctioning Israel

Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia has called on the United Nations to consider imposing sanctions on Israel over its non-compliance with obligatory resolutions passed by the Security Council.

He noted that UNSC Resolution 2728 demanded a ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan, and this had not been implemented by Israel.

Mass Coral Bleaching Is Latest Sign of Incredibly Hot Oceans

Once vibrant corals turning bone white highlights something scientists have been saying for years: the oceans are heating up dangerously.

This week, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced a global coral bleaching event. Too much heat is the main cause of coral bleaching — and there are more worrying signs as the latest ocean-surface readings show temperatures are on the rise.

“This is big,” said John Abraham, professor of thermal sciences at the University of St. Thomas. People are realizing just “how important the oceans are as the measurement…  Read more

I am old enough to remember when "scientists" predicted that the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia was doomed, dying and would soon be a thing of the past. Guaranteed.

However, a funny thing happened to that prediction. It turned out to be totally wrong. In fact as of 2022, the coral now covers 34% of the sea floor, double what it was as recently as 2012 and covers a greater area than in 1985.

Coral lives and dies. It dies from hurricanes and starfish plagues as well as sudden bleaching events. But, surprise , surprise it grows back.

The ocean for many is out of sight and mind. But Atlantic fish stocks are now between 1/1,000 and 1/10,000 of what they were just 150 years ago.

The continental shelves used to be forests of sponges and corals, critical habitat for fish development.

Trawling has reduced to mud, to parking lot, a greater area of the ocean floor than the area of forests cut down in the history of humanity.

Over hunting and fishing, habitat loss, invasive species, pollution and now climate change.

None of these things happen in a vacuum, but there are synergies among them which make the whole vastly greater than the sum of the parts.

We are a water planet and as goes the ocean go we.

Biden's Electric Vehicle Strategy Is A Bust

EV sales are still growing, but not as quickly as the administration hoped and more slowly than in many other advanced economies. Inventories have continued to pile up: Despite $2 billion in dealer discounts and generous federal tax credits, stocks of unsold EVs grew by more than 200% in the first quarter. Ford Motor Co., facing heavy losses on EVs, recently said it will shift its efforts from battery-powered models to hybrids and new gas-fueled models.

How would you feel about switching to an electric vehicle if it meant sacrificing long-distance convenience for environmental benefits?

 @9LMXHBQ from Utah commented…1mo1MO

I wouldn’t want to switch to an electric vehicle because driving long distance seems more important to me.

 @ISIDEWITHasked…1mo1MO

Would you be willing to pay more for an electric vehicle if you knew it was significantly better for the environment, despite potential issues with reliability and repair costs?

 @9LMY5TXDemocrat from Louisiana commented…1mo1MO

I think that it would be better if the future of electric vehicles improved, and by improving I mean that the quality of their batteries would be better and their cost would be the one of an average vehicle and not overpriced. I would totally be willing to pay for an electric car knowing that it helps the environment and is cheap and the battery lasts a lot.

 @ISIDEWITHasked…1mo1MO

Considering the slow adoption of electric vehicles, should individual choice or governmental policy play a bigger role in driving environmental change?

 @9LMXS9Q from New York commented…1mo1MO

-Said auto makers are cancelling factory builds, EV shifts at existing plants, and so on.
