To put it simply and as briefly as possible, abortion for cause other than significant threat to the mother's life makes all human life only as valuable as its level of convenience to others. Just as it would be justified to protect your own life from lethal force, a mother should only be given option to abort in protection of her own life.
By the time a woman is pregnant, regardless of how it came about, she has already ignored multiple levels of preventative options. She has not practiced abstinence, used routine birth control, readily available and not typically expensive, the use of condom or other "device" and the morning after pill which would also be available to one who's activities were spontaneous or even not consensual.
Women seek abortion for all kinds of reasons, far too many to address briefly. But if I can address these reasons all in a general statement, there should be NOTHING that we uphold more than human life. Not education, or career, or finances, or "maybe next year", etc.
Even in the horrible case of a rape. Though it is understandable for a victim to want to pretent nothing happened and return to "normal", the reality is that it's not possible after such a trauma. As a society we need to be raising our children to NOT be helpless victims. They may become victims of crime, but helpless means that they don't seek swift justice by whatever lawful means they are able.
It is also our responsibility as citizens to uphold the law as victims. By not reporting her rape in a timely fashion, the victim becomes complicit in the crime. Again, we can all sympathize, but there are certain life or death realities to consider here - including for the victim. Her lack of reporting the assault prevents ANY health and mental health care for her as well as allowing her rapist to remain on the loose. She now has left the door open for further crimes. Not blaming the victim here, but can you see how this just keeps spinning out of control? As for aborting a pregnancy that results from a rape, I think paternity should determined to prevent false rape accusations as a loophole to get a convenience abortion. So it's not an absolute no- go here, but it's not assumed either.
Again - this is a hugely complex subject and there are certainly people who have situations that fall into gray areas. Legislation has a lot of catching up to do before adequate precedence are established to handle many of them. Also, greatly lacking are systems which support pregnant women and mothers in need as well as foster care/ adoption so that abortion does not seem like the only option for those in difficult circumstances.
I'm not sure of the statistics involved but I suspect there are far fewer abortions that result directly from preserving the mothers life, or even rape than caused by other reasons.
