On Wednesday, when a ban on most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy will take effect.
The strict new law will replace a 15-week ban and require most Floridians and other Southerners seeking the procedure to travel to Virginia or farther.
The new law provides exceptions for abortions to take place up to 15 weeks for pregnancies that result from rape, incest or human trafficking, though women would be required to show documentation such as a restraining order, medical record or police report. There are also exceptions to save the life of the woman and, before the third trimester, for fatal fetal abnormalities.
Instead of the number of abortions in Florida decreasing after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the 15-week ban into law in April 2022, as proponents had hoped, it went up because more patients were coming from Southern states with more restrictions or near-total bans.
Florida, the third-largest state by population, has about 50 clinics and last year provided some 84,000 abortions; nearly 8,000 of them were for women from outside the state. Until July 2022, Florida allowed abortions until about 24 weeks.
I wish we would stop talking about abortion at “6 weeks” because it sounds like the woman has either been pregnant for 6 weeks or has known she’s pregnant for 6 weeks. No. Being 6 weeks pregnant is being 6 weeks from the start date of your last menstruation. You have actually only been pregnant for about 4 weeks and your period would be only 2 weeks late. And that’s only if you have a regular cycle or a 28 day cycle which many women do not. Allowing abortion up to six weeks can make it sound to some people like something somewhat reasonable — as if you have six weeks of pregnancy in which to make up your mind.
Note as Florida seeks to essentially abolish abortion, they also have cut 22,000 children off the federal nutrition program in violation of federal rules. Again - these republicans are not family and child friendly. The agenda is to control women.

Doctors can’t uphold their hippocratic oaths in states with bans against reproductive freedom. And could face dire consequences if they try to practice medicine as situations warrant. So they can’t stay in Florida. And any newly-minted MDs from free blue states will certainly shun it.
Employers can’t ethically ask employees to move to red states, they would be asking women to risk their lives.
Universities can’t recruit.
No woman can safely reside in or visit a forced birth red state.
The disdain for Women in these states continues to shock me. Florida has a ballot measure this election. Make Women full human beings again!!

Conservative women are the ones leading the charge on these initiatives. See also: Supreme Court Justice Barrett, Casey DeSantis, Lori S. Meyer, etc.
These women are the ones leading the charge on these draconian laws. Its a real travesty.

DeSantis was and is hardcore conservative with no concern for the rights of Women, minorities, the LGBT communities, immigrants and any other non-white-male dominated group. And yet, he got nearly 60% of the vote when re-elected. Florida, listen carefully, you get the leadership you deserve.

GOP voters have no ability to see beyond today, becoming the epitome of cutting off your nose to spite your face. They loved it when their dear leader slapped tariffs on China until they realized that it was doing nothing more than raising the prices they pay for everyday gods. They all supported the abortion bans because the only people that get abortions are “someone else.” They scream “Socialism!” when universal care is proposed and then they realize medical costs are bankrupting millions. Will they ever learn?
For me the thing with DeSantis is realizing and remembering how scared he actually is. He's scared of words, and he's scared of women and their freedoms. He's just scared. Someone less scared should take over by pointing out how scared he is and then actually leading.
