The "Religious Right" refers to a political ideology and movement that seeks to integrate conservative religious values, particularly those rooted in Christianity, into public policy and governance. It is characterized by the belief that religious principles should play a central role in shaping laws, social norms, and government actions, especially in areas related to morality, family structure, education, and personal behavior. The Religious Right often advocates for policies that align with traditional interpretations of religious texts, such as opposition to abortion, same-sex…   marriage, and secularism in public institutions, while promoting prayer in schools, religious freedom, and the preservation of what they see as the moral fabric of society.

The origins of the Religious Right can be traced back to various points in history, but its modern form began to take shape in the mid-20th century. In the United States, for example, the movement gained significant momentum in the 1970s and 1980s, as conservative Christian groups became increasingly concerned about the perceived moral decline of society, the rise of secularism, and the growing influence of liberal social movements. Evangelical leaders, such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, played a key role in mobilizing religious conservatives, forming organizations like the Moral Majority, which sought to influence elections and public policy by aligning religious values with conservative political agendas.

While the Religious Right is often associated with Christianity, similar movements have emerged in other religious traditions and regions. In some Muslim-majority countries, for instance, political movements have sought to implement Islamic law (Sharia) as a guiding principle for governance, while in Hindu-majority India, the rise of Hindu nationalism has been linked to efforts to promote Hindu religious values in the political sphere. In each case, the Religious Right seeks to assert the primacy of religious values in public life, often in opposition to secularism, liberalism, or pluralism.

Throughout its history, the Religious Right has been both influential and controversial. Supporters argue that it represents a necessary defense of traditional values and religious freedom in the face of moral relativism and secularization. Critics, however, contend that it undermines the separation of church and state, infringes on individual rights, and imposes a narrow set of beliefs on diverse populations. Despite these debates, the Religious Right continues to be a powerful force in many countries, shaping political discourse and policy decisions on issues ranging from reproductive rights to education and civil liberties.
