If AI companies make money using huge amounts of books, art, music, or code created by real people, it’s only fair that those people get some kind of credit or payment.

I 100% agree. It is unfair to use someones work without consent and then not even pay them for their work being used.

First off I think generative ai should not be used in general. But if it comes down to this, yes, they should be compensated for it.
