Cultural conservatism is a political ideology that emphasizes the preservation of traditional cultural values, beliefs, and social norms. It is rooted in the idea that longstanding customs, religious practices, and moral codes provide stability and continuity for societies. Cultural conservatives often advocate for the maintenance of established institutions such as the family, religion, and national heritage, viewing them as essential to social cohesion and moral order. They tend to resist rapid social change, especially when it comes to issues like gender roles, sexuality, education, and…   the role of religion in public life.

The history of cultural conservatism can be traced back to reactions against the Enlightenment and the social upheavals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Thinkers like Edmund Burke in Britain articulated early conservative arguments, warning that radical change and the abandonment of tradition could lead to social disorder. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, cultural conservatism evolved in response to industrialization, secularization, and the spread of liberal and socialist ideas. In many societies, it became associated with efforts to defend national identity, religious values, and established social hierarchies against perceived threats from modernity, globalization, and progressive movements.

Cultural conservatism is not confined to any single country or culture; it has manifested in various forms around the world, often shaped by local traditions and historical experiences. While the specific content of what is considered "traditional" varies, the underlying impulse is to protect and perpetuate cultural norms that are seen as foundational to a community's way of life. In contemporary politics, cultural conservatives may oppose policies or social trends they believe undermine traditional values, such as changes in marriage laws, secularization of public institutions, or multiculturalism. Despite its resistance to certain changes, cultural conservatism is not necessarily opposed to all forms of progress, but it insists that change should be gradual and respectful of inherited wisdom.
