The Department of Justice and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters filed a joint motion Wednesday to terminate decades of federal monitoring.
Federal oversight began in 1989 after the government sued to purge the union of systemic influence from organized crime and the Italian Mafia. Under the new proposal, the union will transition away from the court-appointed "Final Order" to a completely independent internal system for monitoring corruption. The move follows years of the Teamsters demonstrating a commitment to democratic elections and successful internal anti-racketeering measures.
A federal judge must now approve the motion to officially grant the union full independence for the first time in nearly 40 years.
