Labor unions represent workers in many industries in the United States. Their role is to bargain over wages, benefits, working conditions for their membership. Larger unions also typically engage in lobbying activities and electioneering at the state and federal level.

Help
@983K76N3yrs3Y
I strongly agree that labor unions help the economy as it ensures that worker's will have their rights protected which will lead to their productivity increasing due to high morale. I personally support them since my eldest brother himself is part of a labor union, and it's lead by my uncle and was founded by my grandfather (who unsuccessfully ran for house one time).
@B6JL9CN 2mos2MO
Labor Unions serve primarily to protect the least valuable worker in an organization these days. They serve their purpose in select scenarios but overall hold too much power and right to work laws ensure that businesses are able to actually function properly.
@ISIDEWITH11yrs11Y
Hurt
@9FMZ76X2yrs2Y
Corporations don't have the best interest in their employees, so the employees should organize to support each other.
@HelcovichEmireRepublican5mos5MO
And demand higher wages? This in turns leads to the company being forced to raise their prices. Or better work hours. This leads to not enough work getting done which means they will produce less, so they need to sell what they do have for more.
@ISIDEWITH11yrs11Y
Hurt, I support some private unions but am strongly against public unions
@9FWF5QQIndependent2yrs2Y
Unions shouldn't exist because corporations should take care of their employees. Seeing as that isn't the case, unions should be everywhere.
@95DFSVN3yrs3Y
Help,but only if their viewpoint comes from a nationalistic standpoint.
@9MFBRSL1yr1Y
Help, but limit the powers of certain unions with a history of corruption or lack of accountability like police unions
@9HB5MKV2yrs2Y
Help, but limit the powers of unions with a history of corruption or obstructing accountability such as police unions
@ISIDEWITH1yr1Y
In your opinion, is it better to negotiate as an individual or as part of a larger group, like a union, when seeking better pay or fair treatment at work?
@9WXM5VK12mos12MO
I would say a larger group because I'm with people who are on the same page as me and would agree with what I'm talking about.
@9TS4G9K1yr1Y
Larger group and trying to organise as a big worker's movement spread all over the country.
@9YFGYZGRepublican11mos11MO
For yourself: individual. for the whole nation: union
@9TS4BH51yr1Y
When starting an union, is important to negotiate as a part of a larger group, because you are not only negotiating for myself but for the people
@9FWBB4Y2yrs2Y
Hurt. Unions served their purpose, but not they have become just as corrupt as the corporations they were fighting.
@VulcanMan6 2yrs2Y
What exactly do you think their purpose is, and how have they already done it..?
@anim_xst6mos6MO
Most significant labor unions were established when laborers were worked to near-death for a ridiculous amount of time. With the eight-hour workdays, forty-hour workweeks, and many labor laws we have in place right now, I believe unions have served their purpose.
@9L74FFC2yrs2Y
Help, but limit the powers of unions with a history of avoiding accountability for misconduct like police unions
@99QXK2HIndependent3yrs3Y
By and large, the time has passed when unions were critical, but they should not be banned. However, hey should also not be able to force employees to join
@9GB8PDQ2yrs2Y
Hurt, They allow for labor workers to decrease their dedication and commitment and expect equal pay for those who put in the "extra mile"
@VulcanMan6 2yrs2Y
Workers who "put in the extra mile" are doing so against their own class interests.
@9D6RZXM2yrs2Y
Help in the sense that they ensure fair pay and work conditions, but too often are led by bad actors who protect incompetent employees
@8WX2B454yrs4Y
Both. As a bulwark against abuse of workers, unions provide an invaluable service to their members. However, too many unions have abandoned this basic responsibility in favor of exerting political power to protect outmoded practices and impede innovation.
@B2JRMDK9mos9MO
Help, unions have helped improve labor conditions over the decades. But, leadership can get faulty, so its good to stay aware and reform to the needs of the people under the unions.
@9D3RPBQ2yrs2Y
Maybe unions always help the economy because the economy should be about the people and grassroots movements focusing on the people and workers are necessary
@9FQMHF82yrs2Y
Help,However these Labor unions must be Controlled and Organized by the state.With Independent labor unions banned
@patrickwynneLibertarian5yrs5Y
There are instances where they help, and others where they have hurt. Strong labor unions are necessary to ensure powerful organization do not suppress worker's rights.
@9VJN68HIndependent1yr1Y
I am torn on this. I think setting up a union is an important right for Americans and theoretically helps with the balance of power between owners, management and workers, but the standards need to be very high. It should not be used to get paid more working less, or to over-protect underperforming workers
@9S2PDWW1yr1Y
After the client of labor unions in the latter half of the 20th century, many jobs were lost, and salaries went down. Labor unions have the ability to help the economy by promoting better wages, benefits, and working conditions for the workers. But the issue with labor unions is they can become corrupt and can drive corporations and companies into the mud never rise again. Labor unions can definitely help, but they can also hurt. It is important we find a balance between how much can a union realistically demand and how much is a company allowed to say no to before they have to give in. Is also important to remember that labor unions do not always represent their workers, Sometimes have favorite groups or sometimes they fight for benefits for those under them and it is not always what The workers demanded.
@mechanicalloser2yrs2Y
Help, but with a focus on ensuring they operate with integrity and true representation of their members' needs.
@9G3DHMG2yrs2Y
Hurt, the Government should abolish all forms of unions and have all union members receive the death penalty.
@9DSL36Q2yrs2Y
Help,However I’m in favor of Labour Unions being Controlled And organized by the State.And no independent Labour Unions Allowed
@8GRKBP45yrs5Y
Labor unions are supposed to protect workers. If the economy is affected negatively it means the corporations were abusing their workers and now the bad economy is a byproduct of corruption coming to light.
@ISIDEWITH1yr1Y
Have you ever considered the ethical responsibility businesses have towards their workers when it comes to wages and working conditions?
@98FBB623yrs3Y
Hurt, but we should protect workers' rights
@8WTHFYP4yrs4Y
Labor unions should be formed in response to a major issue that requires group action, solve said issue, then dissolve instead of becoming lobbying groups.
@8FTYZB45yrs5Y
Help, but police unions need to be abolished.
@972XDKH3yrs3Y
Help, but it will be better if the unions take over the workplace
@8T7R5TL4yrs4Y
Labor unions definitely hurt the economy, but I still support them because workers/employees need power too
@8JD9LG85yrs5Y
This is a ridiculous question. The purpose of unions is not to impact the economy but to help workers.
Even if they hurt the economy in the sense of making corporations pay more, worker’s right matter more
@8WBW7TZ4yrs4Y
Depends on how much the union leadership exploits their position for their own personal gain
@92BWNVN3yrs3Y
I think labor unions help the economy. My Grandpa was actually in a labor union.
@8X6VWHQ4yrs4Y
Labor unions are meant to protect employees from employer abuses. This is a necessary harm to the economy that maintains a quality of life
@8KSQZLD5yrs5Y
Unions created safe working environments and livable wages. However, they have become too political. Pros and cons of unions.
@8J7FFB4Progressive5yrs5Y
They are a check on corporate power, and are more necessary the less that government does.
Help, except in the case of some unions where the people working need to be held publicly accountable, like the police union and occasionally teacher's union
@99YW9XG3yrs3Y
Hurt, but are neccesary to stop corporate abuse and greed
@VulcanMan6 3yrs3Y
How do they hurt..?
@9CLWDVD2yrs2Y
We need to stop conflating what's good for the economy with what's good for the American people.
@BassBennySocialist2yrs2Y
A healthy economy can lead to more job opportunities, higher wages, and increased government revenue for public services. Meanwhile, a robust and healthy population can contribute to economic growth by providing a strong labor force. Therefore, it's not about separating the two, but finding a balance where both can thrive.
The purpose of labor unions is not to help the economy, it's to help workers.
@988P37D3yrs3Y
@8T9CLMZ4yrs4Y
they help but they shouldn't need to exist
@B7KP9S83 days3D
Labor unions generally help the economy by raising wages, reducing inequality, improving safety and productivity, and stabilizing consumption, though excessive rigidity or overreach can create localized inefficiencies.
@B7HP5MX6 days6D
Hurt, only government workers should not be allowed to unionize and fees should never be required for non-union workers.
@B7DYBF92wks2W
It strongly depends on the union, some are better than others. I support the freedom to form a union but the powers of them should be determined between the union and it's business.
@B7DHNX52wks2W
We need both in order to keep the market going. Unions are becoming corrupt. Small businesses should be more supported.
@B7BSZRY2wks2W
They do help but I think they shouldn’t lobby. They create plenty of middle to high middle class jobs
@B7BS7BX2wks2W
I don’t think unions should exist. Job security should be a thing without needing a union to back you up.
@B7BJZ4TIndependent2wks2W
the help the people involved, but makes things more expensive in america. also the police unions need to be abolished.
@B79ZQJZ2wks2W
Help but should have zero ability to make political donations. Often corrupt, needs much more transparency. Embezzlement needs to be eradicated within its ranks and daily dealings
@B79VPTG2wks2W
Hurt, their original benefit has long since expired and they've now become too politically influential
@B79F3JV2wks2W
Help, but they sould'nt be able to go past protesting and talking with the government, there should be police there at all protests and remove anyone who gets too unruly.
@B79546C2wks2W
Help, unions function as a wage benchmark/floor, which pushes non-union wages through spillover effect and threat of unionization.
@B78GH233wks3W
Both. They can help people maintain adequate wages and insurance coverage to maintain productivity and keep money flowing in the economy. They can hurt the economy by preventing the technological development of factories, like preventing factory jobs from being taken by robots, decreasing prices and increasing supply.
@B7742VZ3wks3W
Labor unions can be a detriment in some circumstances and hurt in others. Bad for public school districts, good in private businesses.
@B76PR6SRepublican3wks3W
It is beneficial to have unions represent you, but they have become too powerful. They should instead be there for support and advice.
@B74G2BR 3wks3W
I believe they are incredibly helpful for countless tradesmen, giving them reliable jobs and pensions. I do not know enough about union work to have a full opinion on this, but I do know countless people rely on unions for a career.
@B72YDTF4wks4W
While they can hurt the economy at times the benefits in protecting humane rights outweighs the harm. The harm to the economy is manageable in my opinion with some creative problem solving.
@B6YWFR84wks4W
Labor unions should be controlling the economy and their respective trades, some kind of syndicalism
@B6YLP8Q4wks4W
I feel both because there comes a creation of an outcry from employees and it may lead to better pay/conditions, but at the same time it hurts the company, and in certain circumstances, the hurt overpowers the help (hurt)
@B5T3LMJLibertarian 4wks4W
Help, but the government should pass a national right-to-work law and not interfere in labor-management relations one way or another
@B6VZLP81mo1MO
They help in certain areas, but not in all instances. Many areas of the country have developed without unions, so there are other protections in place.
@B6TFX2WIndependent1mo1MO
Helpful on the whole, but that has to be understood in the context that unions are part and parcel of a system with a variety of competing interests. That said, public unions ought to be heavily weakened, if not dismantled outright.
@B6SDP821mo1MO
They help, only In times it's completely necessary, otherwise they shouldn't be formed if it's on reasons that do not benefit the people. Unnecessary rebellions against the federal government whenever they are trying to aid the country, should not be formed.
@B6SCRYN1mo1MO
Some Unions likely are corrupt or incompetent, but also companies find ways to use unions or prevent their existence, so a more complex solution is likely needed
@B6R6GMV1mo1MO
Help, and should be strengthened, but also reformed so that they do not protect bad actors and cannot make political donations or form Super PACs
@B3VGV2T 1mo1MO
Labor unions have a generally positive effect on the economy, as they boost wages, reduce inequality, and improve productivity by giving workers more say in the workplace, leading to a stronger middle class and more resilient economy. Studies, including a report from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, suggest that unions contribute to economic growth and resilience by lowering income inequality, improving working conditions, and increasing employee engagement and productivity. While some argue unions can increase costs and prices, the prevailing evidence indicates that the benefits of incre… Read more
@B6LLR4W2mos2MO
Both I think they help the economy for employees to see how they can make an influence on the economy but it hurts because they do not see how corruption takes hold and we need to implement reforms on labor unions
@B6K5MMX2mos2MO
Depending on the people's values and goals, as well as the way they go about it. It should be peaceful and controlled. Mostly, it helps the economy learn and grow.
@B6JX4DS2mos2MO
I think its important to have labor unions however some definitely do hurt the economy or don't do anything for it, in rare cases help due to people wanting to work there
@B6JW8FG2mos2MO
Get the corruption out and continue to help it's members but members don't get priority over non members
@B6HBNP82mos2MO
Labor unions should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine their effect(s) on the economy. I feel the same way, not every labor union helps and not every labor union hurts
@B6GVNYH2mos2MO
Labor unions help the economy because bald heads like Jeff Bezos would actually sell your families organs to buy a new yacht.
@B6FWZDS2mos2MO
Depends mostly no because big businesses keep to much money and should give higher wages to workers and should put more money in are economy to get hard working Americans out of poverty and I believe they would still be rich after all that
@B6DLC2C2mos2MO
Labor Unions fundamentally "hurt" the economy but they are inherently a good thing; if the workers cannot organize then the workers cannot bargain for their rights, and no bargaining means easy leeway for little pay, and little pay means no consumption. (unions should actually form the basis of economic management/production, but we're thinking pragmatically here for the sake of test. I'm no reformist.)
@B6BYVJZ2mos2MO
Help, but the government should mediate between employees and employers, and don’t allow donations from corps or unions
@B65CHCF3mos3MO
Help, but they need to be reformed. There are some powers they should not have and other powers that they should.
@B637GDQIndependent3mos3MO
Depends. Some have helped working class, others are corrupt and do nothing for the average working citizen.
@B5Y566FPeace and Freedom3mos3MO
the economic impact of labor unions is complex, with arguments for both positive and negative effects.
Unions help the economy. Unions are not inherently corrupt. Any union that is corrupt should be investigated as if it were any other organization.
