This is been the single best week in years for the cause of limiting free expression and free discourse at colleges.

Anyone who claims they believe in free speech - while they cheer the union of hedge fund billionaire and DC politicians to impose speech limits - is a fraud.

 @Pe0plesPartyOatmealDemocratfrom Utah commented…5mos5MO

This is a misframing.

The issue is about drawing a CLEAR line when speech turns into intimidation and calls to violence.

Not a subjective "context dependent" dodge.

That was exactly the distinction these university professors were trying to draw:

We won't punish pure political speech (like op-eds saying "Free Palestine" or signs for "intifada").

But we will punish conduct, when it's aimed in an harassing way at specific students.

 @Pe0plesPartyOatmealDemocratfrom Utah commented…5mos5MO

I would be inclined to agree, however they weren't asked whether "free Palestine" signs or chants were considered harassment.

They were asked specifically whether a "call for genocide" would fall under harassment.

The absolute easiest question to answer "Yes." to.

 @EqualityHarryfrom Arkansas commented…5mos5MO

1. This is not protected speech bc it incites violence.

2. These presidents selectively choose what is free speech on a sliding scale. So they have no standing.

This is more about the patriarchy than anti-semitism.

Also…

How can people scream for free speech and then say why are you allowing someone to say something I don’t agree with?

It IS about behavior. But sadly, nothing seems to matter but hate and anger these days.

They had two months and plenty of legal and other advice to prepare for that day, and they blew it.

If Stefanik had asked, “should white supremacists be allowed to block doors day after day shouting for a return of slavery?” They’d have answered easily.

 @WelfareLunaDemocrat from Utah commented…5mos5MO

This is crazy. They struggled to answer a series of ridiculous or unanswerable questions

 @SovereignEagleRepublican from Texas commented…5mos5MO

And probably did so following strict instructions from university attorneys. This was a show trial.

 @DeficitMeerkatRepublican from Iowa commented…5mos5MO

Simply asking people if calls for genocide are acceptable is a “show trial?

Idiot.

 @ZebraArielDemocrat from Iowa commented…5mos5MO

I think it would be useful if people stepped back from the conclusory framing at the Congressional hearing and reflected on what are common banners and slogans.

 @ISIDEWITHasked…5mos5MO

What's your reaction to university presidents not firmly taking a stand against antisemitism during a Congressional testimony?

 @ISIDEWITHasked…5mos5MO

Can speech that potentially incites violence be justified under the premise of 'context'?

 @ISIDEWITHasked…5mos5MO

How do you feel about university leaders being hesitant to clearly condemn calls for violence against a specific group?
