Should funding for local police departments be redirected to social and community based programs?
No, increase funding and training for police departments in higher crime rate communities
I don't have too much data but do agree with increasing funding in high crime rate communities to sort of help decrease the crime rate since if your more likely to get imprisoned your less likely to do it

Crime rate is rarely lessened by an increase number of police. What we know is that programs like education programs, food assistance, housing assistance, and community organization prevent crimes. It’s common sense to send more resources to aid in the prevention of crimes because it will drop the crime rate, improve relationships between police officers and the communities they are set to protect, and we won’t be spending tax payer dollars on as many overcrowded prisons
High crime rate communities acknowledge the risk of being imprisoned even now and most likely may not respond to the risk of high imprison rates the way we think they will. Additionally, the police, as they already do now, may use the resources they have to implement violence- it will be a situation of fighting fire with fire.

There is no actual link between increased police funding and a decrease in crime. Also the vast majority of crime is related to economic and/or mental health issues so the police have little if anything to do with decreasing crime. If the crime rate is your concern the best thing you can do is increase funding to things that help foster economic equity and opportunity, increase access to abortion (Stanford Law School study), and increase funding/ease of access to mental healthcare.

If you defund the police, you'll also decrease the funding for their training, their gear, their vehicles, etc. It can also decrease their ability to properly respond to calls, such as a home invasion, burglary, shooting, etc. But if you increase the funding for the police, it will increase funding for their training, their gear, vehicles, etc. It could also help them properly know how they respond to situations, such as a home invasion, burglary, etc. So, if you defund the police, it can decrease their ability to professionally handle situations, yet if you increase their funding, it can help them professionally handle various situations.
