The drug cartels have harmed so many people in Mexico, but also US citizens. The cartel works intertwined with the government, so "attacking" the cartel would not just be the cartel but also political figures who were are heavily involved.

Cartels are not only a threat to American citizens and national security, they are brutalizing forces more powerful than the government in the regions where they are active. We should reinforce our ideal of self-determination in our own backyard.

The last time there was a Congressional Declaration of War was in 1941 after Empire of Japan "suddenly and. deliberately" bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Since then, military action has become something that happens without Congressional approval, which is unconstitutional. Within the U.S. Constitution, the Legislative Branch, which houses Congress, has the authority to declare war. Within that is also the House Oversight Committee, giving the citizens of America transparency on the actions of the federal government, upholding checks and balances established within the Constitution.

I will help mexico if they fund the taxes from the Drug Cartels, and bring them to U.S to forward the approval.

This prevents tyrannical decisions to create unnecessary conflict through the chaos of the US military. If one person decides to attack in unplanned and irrational ways, further conflict between the two nations can escalate. It must be handled with precision and with little loss as possible above all.

 @BC7W4J5 from Maryland  agreed…3mos3MO

In article 1 when speaking of the powers of the legislative branch, congressional approval is required for just about most of the moves the president wants to take.

 @BBXFT5Z from Utah  agreed…3mos3MO

Congress has the power to declare war and issue letters of marque. It should either declare war against specific cartels or issue letters against specific cartel leaders/members which the President as Commander-in-Chief can execute.

 @BBV7H9R from California  agreed…4mos4MO

More context to my position is that there are checks and balances in our system. If the President decides to try and go help Mexico from the Mexican Drug Cartel on their own then that will create discourse, it should be a decision that is discussed among multiple people because lives and other societal issues are at stake.

 @BB75LHF from Illinois  agreed…4mos4MO

Mexico is one of the highest drug-trafficking places for importation into America. I believe no matter what military action the US Government takes, there needs to be approval, unless its a imediate, catastrophic danger to the United States

 @BB43QTVIndependent from Washington  agreed…4mos4MO

According to the constitution, all things related to war requires congressional approval, except for how war will be waged.

 @BB2SVLS from Georgia  agreed…4mos4MO

Checks and balances and that congress should be notified, but if it is interfering with U.S. citizens then should be removed permenantly.

 @B9YW9PT from Kansas  agreed…5mos5MO

Due to the overwhelming evidence that the cartels are closely involved in government operations it wouldn't be simply targeting an organization, but key political figures installed to benefit the cartels.

 @B9VVD8BRepublican from Virginia  agreed…5mos5MO

Military action in Mexico without Mexican cooperation is an act of war, is likely to be lengthy, expensive, and dangerous to American troops. This requires congressional approval, if not an outright declaration of war

 @B9SXWQDDemocrat from Louisiana  agreed…5mos5MO

It should never be a decision just made by the president we are a Democratic Govorment and we should run like on regardless of how bad the situation gets the three government branches should always be checked by on another.

 @B9RTG5Y from Missouri  agreed…5mos5MO

Congressional approval will reduce the chances that mobilizing the military would be a rash decision and force more consideration on the situation

 @B9R5J6FPeace and Freedom from Washington  agreed…5mos5MO

The president already needs the approval of Congress to declare a war on any other country, and this position is similar to that.

 @B9KQ96D from Ohio  agreed…5mos5MO

Well, first, the president shouldn't have the power to initiate an attack or assistance against a dangerous force without the consent of the people.

 @B99825P from North Carolina  agreed…6mos6MO

I don't think we should ever just go into a country. That's not ours and force our objectives on anyone else we should build a relationship with the Mexican government work together to take out the drug cartel.

 @B8VXH4Q from Indiana  agreed…7mos7MO

Congress should be the only entity within our government to declare war, this is what that would be and the president should only have power to temporarily impliment troops.

 @B8HX46Q from Arizona  disagreed…7mos7MO

Thousands of Americans have died at the hands of drugs or drug-related crimes, which are largely present due to the Mexican Drug Cartels. With the President having the duty to do what they must to maintain the safety and security of Americans, there may be situations in which action must be taken. If action can only be achieved through congressional approval, a chance that there is a miscommunication that influences congress to deny approval, can lead to more deaths of Americans.

 @BC3Z5LKDemocrat from New York  agreed…3mos3MO

I believe more voices and agreement on serious topics will help a citizen like me feel more safe or okay with how the president uses his right over military in violent cases.
