We can (and have been) ending racism by fixing specific problems, celebrating real progress, and treating people as individuals—not by labeling entire systems as permanently and inherently racist forever.
Here’s why this works well, in simple terms:
• Progress is real and huge:
Since the Civil War,
ended slavery,
banned Jim Crow laws,
passed the Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, and more.
Polls show most Americans (including majorities across parties) agree schools should teach about historical racism and America’s big steps forward toward equality. Saying systems are “inherently” racist forever ignores how much we’ve changed laws and institutions for the better—it can make kids feel hopeless instead of hopeful.
And do we need more Hopeful children these days!!
