Most abortions occur in the early stages of pregnancy, typically within the first trimester. This is long before a fetus (which is capable of feeling and developing). At this stage in pregnancy, it is not a child but indeed a "cluster of cells". Of course, those cell clusters have the potential to grow into a fetus that then grows into a person. There are many studies available that say abortions occurring after this point account for 1 percent or less of the total amount of abortions. Moreover, these "late stage" abortions are performed not because the pregnancy was simply unwanted, but for some other reason, such as the health of the pregnant person or a medical issue with the fetus that makes it incompatible with life, and these were very much wanted pregnancies. I don't believe that the potential of life is more important than a life already being lived. It is not for me or anyone else to determine. There are a myriad of reasons why someone might seek an abortion, and it is not for me nor anyone else to determine the validity of those reasons, ranging from financial concerns to housing and insecurity to domestic violence and abuse. Carrying a pregnancy to term is more than just "daunting"; it can be life-threatening, especially in a country like the US, where maternal and infant mortality rates are on the rise, particularly for Black and brown pregnant people. Pregnancy can put immense strain on the body and cause irreversible harm. Even if both parent and child come out unharmed and physically healthy, there can be unseen mental and emotional consequences to contend with. Following through with an unwanted pregnancy puts children born into these situations at increased risk for illness, abuse, neglect, homelessness, etc. Adoption or even the foster care system is not fool proof safeguards against these outcomes either. Both the adoption and foster care systems are already overloaded and overburdened as it is, and there are millions of already born children stuck in the system without a proper and loving home. Ultimately, I believe that abortion is a medical procedure and is deeply personal. I would not deny someone cancer treatment or heart surgery; I would not deny someone an abortion. Moral judgements have no place in medicine. I don't believe healthcare of any kind should be denied to anyone for any reason.
