Personal autonomy matters, but the system needs to guarantee true consent and adequate treatment options first. Denying MAID outright for mental illness ignores individual rights, but so does failing to provide alternatives and support.
This is the right call. We should be protecting the vulnerable and focusing on real solutions for mental health, not making it easier for people suffering to give up hope.
Mental illness deserves better access to care, not an expedited path to MAID. We should be investing in mental health, housing, and social supports so people don’t feel like their only option is to end their lives.
