On Sunday, a one-year-old boy named Kohen Wiley was fatally shot when a Senatobia police officer fired into a vehicle in a Walmart parking lot.
The officer was responding to a shoplifting report and opened fire as the car, which also held the child’s mother and another adult, attempted to leave. Kohen’s mother stated she lifted her baby up to the window so officers could see him, but they fired anyway, wounding a passenger and killing the toddler. Hundreds of residents have since protested the department's use of lethal force for a minor crime, leading police to deploy tear gas to disperse the crowds.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is now reviewing the case while the family’s legal team demands the immediate release of all surveillance and body camera footage.
