Hawaii Senate Vice President Michelle Kidani announced this week she will retire from her seat on June 30 after 18 years in the legislature.
The 77-year-old lawmaker cited health concerns for her departure, which comes after months of public speculation regarding her physical well-being during the recent legislative session. As a powerful voice for central Oahu, Kidani long chaired the Senate’s Education Committee, wielding significant influence over the state’s school funding and capital improvement projects. Her exit creates a critical vacancy that must be filled by Governor Josh Green from a list of nominees provided by the Democratic Party within 60 days.
Voters will eventually choose a permanent successor in the next election cycle to represent the Mililani and Waipio communities.
