Here are your answers compared to this voter’s answers.
Social › Abortion
8>8 Personal answerI personally am pro-life. However, I also believe in supporting the law of the land. Roe vs. Wade is a legal precedent that has sustained over 50 years through many court challenges as to government overreach in attempting to ban a woman's right to choose. Privately held insurance should be required to fund any and all prenatal care. However, I do not feel that the government should pay for abortions, or subsidize clinics, without rigorous standards as to the reason for terminating a pregnancy. Health and safety of the mother, to include mental health as a result of rape/incest, should continue to be funded after counseling takes place. I do feel that the government should subsidize the cost for public adoptions. |
Domestic Policy › Gun Control
8>8 Personal answerI believe that the "gun-show" loophole should be closed. Also, I believe there should be a national database developed and maintained for all felons and those determined to be mentally ill. This should be included when performing background checks. There needs to also be a list of firearms that are banned from public or private purchase. Gun purchasing for novelty or collection is not a reason for high-powered weapons from being sold. "What's the purpose" for firearms needs to be determined. |
Social › Planned Parenthood Funding
8>8 Personal answerYes, their services reach far beyond abortions and can save many lives through cancer screening, prenatal services, and adoption referrals |
the Economy › Minimum Wage
8>8 Personal answerMinimum wage increases are more tricky than people think. By raising the level of cost for payroll on business and industry simply results in other cuts or income base from other sources. If prices go up to cover the increase, then it would be impossible to create a minimum wage that supports an entire household. It was never intended for that purpose. Allow businesses to offer a competitive wage within their community. Cost of living is so vastly different based on available tax base in regions across the nation. |
Domestic Policy › Armed Teachers
8>8 Personal answerSecondary campuses should have assigned resource officers to provide security support. They need to be licensed peace officers in all jurisdictions of the schools within a given district. |
the Environment › Climate Change
8>8 Personal answerYes, and provide more incentives for alternative energy production |
the Economy › Taxes
8>8 Personal answerI believe the tax code is too complex, and benefits those with the ability to hire someone to understand loopholes in the system. The average taxpayer does not have the ability to be fully knowledgeable of all of the nuances. If it was a flat tax regardless of annual income, reducing government subsidies for large corporations, we would ensure that the amount paid is proportionate at all levels. |
Education › Critical Race Theory in K-12 Education
8>8 Personal answerI believe that it is important to educate students on the history and critical issues surrounding race relations in the country. However, I believe that the discussion should happen when students are able to have a well-rounded, belief-based dialogue on the content. This would typically be appropriate at the high school and university level. I do not, however, feel that students should be "charged" with racism simply because they are white. White privilege exists. However, it is not conducive to a broader understanding to ensure every white student feels they personally are inherently biased against students and communities of color. |
Education › Student Loans
8>8 Personal answerNo, but we should still reduce interest rates for student loans |
Education › Free College for All
8>8 Personal answerI believe that the federal government should help subsidize the tuition costs for public universities. However, privatization of higher learning institutions would end up becoming the norm and tuition rates would be uncontrolled otherwise. |
Social › Government Mandates
8>8 Personal answerNo, it should be covered like any other prescription |
Healthcare › Medicaid
8>8 Personal answerCurrent Medicaid coverage provides for medical support for those who qualify. Those who are employable, and able to work, should be able to offset some of the costs through the Affordable Care Act. If someone's income is too low, financial assistance is available as much as no cost to the insured. I do, however, believe that the benefits should completely cover the needs of anyone over the age or 65, or those disabled to the point they are unable to be gainfully employed. |
Science › Mandatory Vaccinations
8>8 Personal answerI believe that a robust immunization process needs to be established. While religious exceptions do occur, the majority of "opt outs" are from parents and their individual, personal beliefs. All children in public school systems should at a minimum be required to be vaccinated for any known deadly contagious diseases. Other vaccines, such as influenza, should still be optional. |
Immigration › Immigration Healthcare
8>8 Personal answerIf individuals in our country are here without a path to citizenship, then I believe they should have their serious healthcare needs met. If they are here, and they follow the proper procedures to be in our county, then we should help through the Affordable Care Act. There must be a path to citizenship, they must be gainfully employed, and be current on any tax burden according to the US tax code. |
Healthcare › Single-Payer Healthcare
8>8 Personal answerI do not believe in socialized, government-run medical insurance coverage. I believe that the government should negotiate on behalf of the citizens to keep it affordable. However, I will not support a "Medicare for All" plan. It sounds like it should be simplistic, but in fact it would result in a marked increase in tax base required to fund it. |
Elections › Voter Fraud
8>8 Personal answerNo, and automatically register every citizen to vote when they turn 18 |
Immigration › Border Wall
8>8 Personal answerI do not feel that it is financially feasible to have a continuous wall on the border, especially Texas. Our border is defined by the Rio Grande River, and therefore is subject to erosion. The amount of privately-owned land necessary to sustain it would be inequitable to other parts of the border in the Southwest US. I do, however, feel that we can better fund and monitor the Texas and Mexico border. There are high-volume illegal crossings in our state. They are defined and their locations are known. If we are to build a physical barrier, then target those areas. And, once the barrier has been erected, financially subsidize the cost of the private land required for construction. Then, adequately fund other ways to monitor and enforce the rest. |
Domestic Policy › Gun Liability
8>8 Personal answerThis is where comprehensive background checks comes into play. If you are a felon or deemed mentally ill, then you should not be able to purchase firearms. If they do, and violence against others results with the use of that firearm, then negligence claims should be able to take place in the criminal justice system. However, I do believe it should only be the individual selling the gun without meeting all government regulations. The gun manufacturer should only be criminally liable if they provide direct sales without meeting all government regulations. |
Crime › Defunding the Police
8>8 Personal answerI feel that both should be adequately funded. To assume that diversion of funds, which would deplete the financial resources of local law-enforcement, would put an undue burden on state and federal entities (state patrol, marshals, and FBI). It would also increase the amount of time it would take for response to emergent situations. The funding and support of social and community based programs should be part of the equation. This is no different than a school principal versus counselor. There are times when situations required disciplinary response, while other times would only require counseling and community support. |
Elections › Right of Foreigners to Vote
8>8 Personal answerNo, only legal citizens should be allowed to vote |
the Economy › Universal Basic Income
8>8 Personal answerThis is not sustainable over time. And, inflation would only increase the demand. I would rather see a Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid system in place that is financially secure for the near and not-so-distant future. Baby-boomers are retiring, and the system needs to be ready to accommodate their needs. |
Crime › Demilitarize the Police
8>8 Personal answerYes, but only in response to extreme situations |
Immigration › In-State Tuition
8>8 Personal answerUntil this is guaranteed for all US citizens, it should not be available to anyone that is undocumented. I feel the same when it comes to free community college tuition for all. |
Foreign Policy › United Nations
8>8 Personal answerI believe our membership and support needs to be consistent with other ally nations. However, the benefits we receive from peacekeeping forces prevents our military from being over-extended during peacetime. |
Healthcare › Obamacare
8>8 Personal answerI believe that affordable health care is a fundamental right for all citizens in a democracy. I do not believe in socialize, government run insurance. However, for those not covered by insurance through their employer, an affordable option must be available. Furthermore, everyone with insurance to see a primary care physician (PCP) will not need to seek indigent care at a publicly funded hospital's emergency room. Affordable prescription drugs will often prevent medical conditions from requiring a higher level of care. |
Foreign Policy › Military Spending
8>8 Personal answerThe military should be funded appropriately and sufficiently to meet our commitments both domestically and abroad. This includes spending for Veteran benefits and facilities. Our VA benefits should be sufficient to at least mirror other healthcare facilities across the country. Care should not be sub-standard. |
Elections › Electoral College
8>8 Personal answerNo, but reform so that votes are distributed proportionally instead of the current winner take all system |
Science › Nuclear Energy
8>8 Personal answerYes, temporarily while we increase investment into cleaner renewable alternatives |
Science › GMO Labels
8>8 Personal answerYes, consumers have a right to know what is in their food |
Transportation › Public Transportation
8>8 Personal answerYes, and provide more free public transportation |
Crime › Criminal Voting Rights
8>8 Personal answerNo |
the Environment › Plastic Product Ban
8>8 Personal answerNo, but increase tax incentives for companies that make biodegradable products |
National Security › Military Congressional Approval
8>8 Personal answerOnly if there is a clear and present danger to our citizens or assets, or if there is an opportunity to bring a member to justice without enough lead-time to move through the process. I do believe that the checks-and-balances system needs to be followed by involving the House and Senate Leadership in the conversation through timely notification of any and all military engagement. |
the Environment › Paris Climate Agreement
8>8 Personal answerYes, until other countries are held to the same standards |
National Security › Foreign Assassination
8>8 Personal answerA risk-assessment needs to occur with a rigorous discussion taking place. We are not a military state, and assassination is not a standard that we should employ. However, use of necessary force to ensure the safety and security of our borders and global assets should be allowed with prescribed processes in place for authorization of such force. |
