It’s much more beneficial to the free market if we incentivize people to stop using fossil fuels, then using authoritarian strategies to stop people.

Uh... I don't have a counter, I agree. People shouldn't be using fossil fuels, but people also shouldn't be forcing other people to align with those views without there being any choice whatsoever.

Providing incentives allows companies to work to create the nessecary infrastructure for diesel alternatives. We do not currently have enough infrastructure to allow for diesel to be not used anymore.

Providing incentives pulls company focus away from being personally targeted, which can lead to legal challenges or future politicians appealing to them through election deals, and instead gives them a sense of control and financial success. It reframes the proposition as fiscally burdened on the government rather than the company, which makes them more likely to be open to the ideas presented by the government.
TDLR: Companies are focused on profit so if the solution is seen as more profitable then they are more likely to do it
