South Dakota Governor Race Heats Up: Property Rights and Spending Take Center Stage
The first official ticket for South Dakota's 2026 gubernatorial race has launched, with a strong focus on protecting property rights and curbing government spending.
The candidates, including legislator Karla Lems, are campaigning against 'corporate welfare' and the use of eminent domain for projects like carbon pipelines. Lems, known for her advocacy as a landowner, recently succeeded in passing legislation to limit eminent domain. The campaign criticizes past state investments in business incentives, arguing for a shift toward fiscal restraint.
Their platform is resonating with voters concerned about government overreach and the influence of large corporations.

Hansen-Lems first ticket in the 2026 Governor’s race
Karla Lems has been in the Legislature for a shorter time but has made the most of it. As a landowner herself, she was also outspoken against the use of eminent domain for carbon pipelines, introducing House Bill 1052, which was signed into law in March.
