The recognition itself is not the problem, it’s the way it will be used
Though its use may start benign, it will end up being used as an invasion of privacy and for other immoral purposes, especially when private corporations get their hands on it. The way in which they implement it would also need to be very invasive by nature. This also opens the door to other, less benign forms of searches and regulation etc. Also, this is not the type of issue that the anti-recognition crowd should be forced to accept should they be in the minority. This type of surveillance would require a full, 100% consent from all voters. And what about the non voters? This is not about politics, this is regulation and surveillance. Not to mention when it goes wrong, for example algorithmic bias. However, I interpreted this question from the perspective of government use. I am aware that some versions of face recognition already exist, for example Apple Face ID.
