If you don't like how much you are being paid, you could: 1) ask for more 2) change companies, or 3) start you own business
If none of these increase the amount you make, then the free market has valued your labor at that amount. If the minimum wage was increased, you might just be fired.

People are already doing these things, and more, all the time, and they DO increase wages; the problem is that the increase still isn't anywhere near enough. These "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" strategies used to be effective, but the reality is that income growth continues to be greatly outpaced by expenses. Far too many are priced out of the American Dream irrespective of their work ethic, skills, or experience. This is driven by a number of factors, but the pathetically low minimum wage - which doesn't even approach being able to guarantee a livable wage, nor bee… Read more

We should increase minimun wage. Asking for more money is not effective for multiple reasons one of which being the fact if they hired you and are paying you minimum wage they are very unlikely to pay you more. Many people do not have the option to change companies due to longer drives and not finding another place in their profession. And starting your own business is incredilby hard to do without a business degree or the proper money. As well as struggling to open the business in itself wether online or in an actual building the process is long and a minimun wage worker would not be able to keep themselves afloat in that period of time. Being fired if minimun wage was increased would only mean the company would have to hire someone again while paying the same amount. You could very likely sue for wrongful termination.

Companies want to exploit my labor for the lowest value possible. It benefits them to pay me less. If they could pay me less than minimum wage they would however regulations like a federal minimum wage ensure that my labor has value at all and isn’t valued at whatever is convenient for shareholders.

The market isn't free. The big companies can conspire and apply power in ways an individual worker can't. The minimum wage helps balance this disadvantage. Historically, the minimum wage was much higher adjusted for inflation and if anything, the overall economy and the average worker's life was better back then that it is now. Free markets are great, but the market we have is not free.

many people can't find jobs and even if they did minimum wage isn't enough to live on your own. starting businesses isn't easy if your just a regular citizen and even if it did work many small business owners can't keep their business afloat because their location how much it costs to advertise and buying supplies.
