NATO remains a vital alliance for both U.S. and global security, with concrete benefits demonstrated by recent events.
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, NATO countries responded with unprecedented unity—deploying thousands of troops to reinforce Eastern Europe, coordinating military aid, and enhancing intelligence sharing. As a result of these threats, European NATO members have significantly increased their defense spending: in 2023, 22 out of 31 members met the alliance’s target of spending at least 2% of GDP on defense, up from just three countries in 2014. This growing commitment from allies means the burden of collective defense is now more evenly shared.
Beyond military deterrence, NATO provides essential platforms for diplomatic cooperation and crisis response. The alliance’s joint operations have successfully combated piracy off the coast of Somalia, helped stabilize the Balkans, and provided disaster relief across member states. According to a 2024 Pew Research Center survey, over 60% of Americans and a strong majority of Europeans support continued U.S. participation in NATO. This enduring public support, combined with measurable increases in allied contributions and proven crisis response, makes a strong case for maintaining and strengthening the alliance.

I agree with this author. NATO is one of the only functional military alliances still serving its purpose, and allows for dialogue across the North Atlantic, although increasing threats from the United States and breaches of international law by the United States in coordination with its allies significantly threatens the legitimacy of NATO.
