The Interior Department is proposing to expand oil and gas drilling across more than ONE BILLION acres of U.S. waters. This will threaten endangered whales, generate toxic air pollution, and put coastal communities and economies at risk of oil spills and other drilling impacts.

The pragmatic counter-argument holds that domestic oil drilling is a vital pillar of national security, ensuring the U.S. remains insulated from the price shocks and political leverage of volatile foreign regimes. Furthermore, hydrocarbons are currently irreplaceable for high-density applications like aviation, shipping, and the manufacturing of essential petrochemicals including the very components needed to build wind turbines and solar panels. Therefore, maintaining oil production is less about corporate profit and more about preventing a catastrophic collapse in the standard of living while the long-term transition to nuclear and renewable energy is physically constructed.

Oil drilling is risky for the environment, we do not need to practice offshore oil drilling as we may have other substitutes for fuels in the future.
