The reliance that the United States has on fossil fuels is derived from the actions that lobbyists have taken in Congress. The continuous congressional push for offshore oil drilling is in place only to benefit the large corporations that fund such lobbyists and does not provide any benefit over other green energy sources like nuclear energy. In short, oil drilling exchanges the health of our environment for profit for the 1%.

 @BCDPZ8L from Kansas  disagreed…3mos3MO

The Interior Department is proposing to expand oil and gas drilling across more than ONE BILLION acres of U.S. waters. This will threaten endangered whales, generate toxic air pollution, and put coastal communities and economies at risk of oil spills and other drilling impacts.

 @BCD3DL3 from New Mexico  disagreed…3mos3MO

The pragmatic counter-argument holds that domestic oil drilling is a vital pillar of national security, ensuring the U.S. remains insulated from the price shocks and political leverage of volatile foreign regimes. Furthermore, hydrocarbons are currently irreplaceable for high-density applications like aviation, shipping, and the manufacturing of essential petrochemicals including the very components needed to build wind turbines and solar panels. Therefore, maintaining oil production is less about corporate profit and more about preventing a catastrophic collapse in the standard of living while the long-term transition to nuclear and renewable energy is physically constructed.

 @BCDW9ML from Connecticut  agreed…3mos3MO

Oil drilling is risky for the environment, we do not need to practice offshore oil drilling as we may have other substitutes for fuels in the future.

There are many other energy sources that we can invest in to reduce our carbon emissions. The only reason we are still dependent on fossil fuels is that it benefits already rich men.

Much of global warming is caused by drilling. It causes us to dig into more land and take over so it limits wildlife.

 @B8S4DJG  from Virginia  agreed…7mos7MO

Major incidents like the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico released an estimated 134 million gallons of oil, leading to the death of countless marine animals, birds, and long-term damage to fragile coastal marshlands and fisheries . Even minor spills and routine operational discharges accumulate over time, impacting local marine habitats .

Drilling ruins the environment and the only ones supporting it are too old to suffer the consequences when it becomes a problem

 @BCGTJ36Independent  from Washington  agreed…3mos3MO

Clean energy is the only way to responsibly invest in this country's future as environmental depletion will cause long-term, irreversible harm to so many aspects of life

 @BD9LBYP from Ohio  agreed…2mos2MO

Our governments time and money could be spent funding cleaner/and unlimited forms of energy such as solar power.

 @BC5KSQG from New York  agreed…3mos3MO

Offshore drilling has historically caused several oil spills, such as The Persian Gulf, The Deepwater Horizon, Ixtoc 1, and Atlantic Empress, to name a few, all releasing at least, 90 million gallons of oil into the oceans, and at most, 520 million gallons of oil.

 @9H4SKGC from New York  agreed…3yrs3Y

There are already better ways of extracting energy instead of oil because energy can replace oil & is more renewable

 @BBX2D3G from California  agreed…3mos3MO

The U.S. government will never stop in the pursuit of more oil in other nations. We have done this in the middle east for so long.
We have completely alienated the people in the middle east with unwanted American intervention in order for us to make a profit.

 @BBTX3PW from Kansas  agreed…4mos4MO

from today to a couple of years ago we can see the effect we created on the environment and climate. The air is more polluted there is more trash everywhere and how even the temperatures arent the same anymore. Expanding the oil drilling could add more damage to the environment we should rather minimize that.

 @BBXWG2J from Colorado  agreed…3mos3MO

It damages marine enviornments for animals, and oil drilling can cause posioned waters when done inproperly.

 @BCJV3CS from Washington  agreed…3mos3MO

Better alternatives to oil for energy are things like Nuclear. Nuclear is incredibly fearmongered by media paid out by oil companies, yet is much safer. The commonly cited events where plants blew and left radiation were few and far between, some of the factors even being out of control like the tsunami of the 2011 Fukushima plant disaster.

 @BBRXJ2Y from Florida  agreed…4mos4MO

If people are swimming or fishing around in oil, it doesn't take long for the oil to get into their lungs and get them sick and might possibly die. And it only takes one small flame to set a whole area on fire.

 @B8TB2XN from North Carolina  agreed…7mos7MO

Over shore oil drilling has been one of the most crucial things because it gets in the water and kills its animals

 @BC6SGQKDemocrat  from Wisconsin  agreed…3mos3MO

Many animals are losing their homes. How would you like it if all of a sudden a rush of oil started caving into your house? you wouldn't like it would you? This is exactly why we should stop oil drilling.

 @9H3GBGBPeace and Freedom from Pennsylvania  agreed…3yrs3Y

I get the need for oil drilling but I feel like we constantly advance in things that we necessarily don't need like cars, phones, etc. By now, I feel as though we should have a better way to figure out a substitute for oil drilling because of the damage and mess it creates.

 @9H5F6V3agreed…3yrs3Y

If we were to expand the oil drilling we are killing each other more by making out home planet sick with all this air population we should work smarter and at a team to see what we can do to make healthy energy to drive and other things that we use oil for .

 @9H2KCDG from Arizona  agreed…3yrs3Y

Gas which is oil which is used everyday and costs much money for people. Electric is safer for people and will lower spending costs for gas.

 @9HDX6Q4agreed…3yrs3Y

Oil Drilling will hurt our environment and will hurt our future generations. We damage the ability to walk outside and smell clean air. We should really convert to a better, non damaging source of fuel to protect us people and the future.

Fracking pollutes well water if you are republican I assume your house runs on groundwater. And you don’t want that contaminated

 @BD36T7S from Kentucky  agreed…2mos2MO

70% of the US refineries are tooled to refine heavy crude. Light crude (which we produce the most of) is both less expensive to refine and what we have in more supply.

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill ruined the entire ecosystem that surrounded it. Any oil spill or mistake can be devastating.

 @BCKL99MDemocrat from Massachusetts  agreed…3mos3MO

Studies have found decreased reproductive health and increased mortality in animal populations near drilling sites.

 @BBV4Q4H from California  agreed…4mos4MO

Between 2009–2014, 11 major US states reported over 21,000 spills, releasing over 175 million gallons of wastewater, threatening drinking water, aquatic life, and human health with heavy metals and high salinity.

 @BBRGSX8 from Virginia  agreed…4mos4MO

Just like with the regulations already in place for the United States ecosystem and lands, the same should go for offshore countries and land, to keep our planet alive longer.

 @BBGLBRJ from Arizona  agreed…4mos4MO

For issues of nuclear energy creating deeds for how much the businesses can pollute creates a system for the businesses to produce at their max capabilities and be able to buy or sell their deeds as needed to keep that production without being having to change or adjust how much they pollute. Because the plants that under produce their pollution and sell their deeds to higher polluting factories, they make returns on their lower pollution levels, and the firms that cannot lower pollution rates have the ability to by these deeds.

 @BBDL6HPfrom Maine  agreed…4mos4MO

The us doesn't need that oil as it has enough gdp already, it's quite selfish for them to take it from countries that haven't done anything

 @B8FFMGRDemocrat from Massachusetts  agreed…7mos7MO

Oil drilling fuels climate change, producing over 6 billion metric tons of CO₂ each year, and disasters like the 2010 BP spill killed thousands of marine animals and cost $65 billion in damages. Communities near drilling sites also face higher rates of respiratory illnesses, showing that the environmental and health costs far outweigh the economic benefits.

 @B7YT266 from Virginia  disagreed…8mos8MO

Leadership and accountability: Opponents of a neutral position argue that leaders and policymakers have a duty to take a clear stand on issues with such profound and far-reaching consequences. For many, a "no position" posture is a sign of a lack of leadership and a refusal to be held accountable for the outcomes of continued fossil fuel extraction.

 @B7QCYB9Peace and Freedom  from Georgia  agreed…8mos8MO

Crude oil is used as fuel for vehicles; burning it releases a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere; drilling efforts emit heavy metals and volatile organic compounds into the air and water. According to scientists, the world cannot burn more than one-third of its known oil reserves in order to prevent the worst effects of climate change. According to the International Energy Agency, in order to meet net-zero ambitions, the oil and gas sector would have to cut its emission

 @B2FCHZ8 from Wisconsin  agreed…1yr1Y

Oil drilling is a filthful disgrace on this planet and we should replace it with a cleaner alternative

 @B2DQYPZ from Wisconsin  agreed…1yr1Y

Oil drilling or fracking not only poisons groundwater, but also releases large amounts of methane into the atmosphere, contributing to greenhouse gases and is even more effective than carbon.

 @9ZYJQMZ from Illinois  agreed…2yrs2Y

The pollution circulated from oil drilling is deadly. It leads to severe health consequences like respiratory disease and even death. Minorities will suffer the most from these consequences as a percentage of these people live in economically-disadvantaged communities due to historic redlining and are not equipped with the proper infrastructure to withstand these harms.

A short list of oil spills in us waters
1969, 1976, 1979, 1989, 1990, 1993, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2010, 2010 again, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2022, 2023, 2025, 2026... This is not comprehensive. Just note worthy examples of pollution in effort to make more pollution to power polluting.

 @9JTFWMGPeace and Freedom from Oregon  agreed…2yrs2Y

Oil drilling has been the reason for the death of large amounts of ocean life, caused by giant oil spills. It is an extremely harmful process, for the ecosystems being interrupted by the drilling process and the environment of our planet, which is harmed by the greenhouse gasses from fossil fuels. It should be more heavily regulated and stopped completely at the earliest possible time.

 @9H5NSNL from New York  agreed…3yrs3Y

It ruins biodiversity such as marine life and damaging soil on the ground as well as causing pollution problems.

 @BC38KJQ from California  agreed…3mos3MO

in the deep water horizon alone, 206 million gallons of oil were spilled because BP continued to drill even though they should not have and caused an explosion killing 11 workers along with it.

 @BBXCZ55  from California  agreed…3mos3MO

Oil prices are different globally, so increasing domestic drilling won't guarantee lower and stable prices.

 @BBX9R2R from North Carolina  agreed…3mos3MO

Oil Companies have noticed that investing in traditional oil drilling generates more money than investing in renewable energy.

 @B8RDHBC from California  agreed…7mos7MO

The Santa Barbara oil spill happened off shore in California took 45 days to fully clear and in that time fishing was completely closed the beaches were closed and for a town like Santa Barbara those are both essential to economy and to the residents as they rely heavily on tourism and off shore fishing.

 @BBX7ZBRDemocrat from California  agreed…3mos3MO

how would you like it if you were oiled up unconsentually? Plus Oil is a finite resource and we rely on it to much especially becuase it will run out eventually

 @BDGXGMX  from Massachusetts  agreed…1mo1MO

There is plankton on the top of the water that makes up 75% of earths clean air and oil drilling can pollute those plankton and pollute animals that hold up the ocean ecosystem like fish and sharks. Without these animals and plants the ocean pyramid would fall to shambles and the ocean would crumble to nothing.

 @9H4SSN9Democratfrom Maine  agreed…3yrs3Y

Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and all other advanced nations are stopping all investment in oil or have already stopped relying on oil. America, being the richest country in the world, must use the free market to create sustainable alternatives not only to set an example to the world, but also to ensure our economy will not fall behind the rest of the world.

 @9GH8MPB from Washington  agreed…3yrs3Y

There are also oil spills caused by offshore oil drilling. The New Horizons oil spill was among the worst oil spills in history. Additionally, expanding offshore drilling puts in place infrastructure that is going to be detrimental to the environment. Additionally, the economy can, with adequate actions, evolve to be resilient without the destruction of the environment.
