Should the federal government institute a mandatory buyback of assault weapons?
No, this is a violation of the 2nd amendment
The 2nd amendment protects gun ownership, but it doesn't prevent regulations for public safety. And…
The main reason I've seen for people wishing to buy back or ban guns is to "reduce gun violence." Ask yourself this: if you were planning something horrible, say, breaking into a house and killing your ex, would a ban on guns or fewer guns in circulation stop you from getting one? No, probably not, the black market already sells military-grade weaponry, and it wouldn't be a stretch to assume that you're going to be able to get some sort of firearm. All in all, banning or buying back guns doesn't reduce gun violence; if anything, it increases the potential quality of the weapons when the crime does happen, plus, a good law-abiding citizen will now not be able to defend themselves as they now can't find guns or its illigal to purchase one. As for solutions, it's not an all-size, one fit sollution, maybe schools could use police as pseudo-bodyguards, increased security for houses, or increased funding for the police. The bottom line is, banning/buying back guns doesn't even come close to preventing criminal use of guns, and the solution doesn't involve infringing on the 2nd ammendment.
