Pentagon suspends 86-year-old defense pact with Canada over spending and F-35 delays
On Monday, the Pentagon announced it is suspending participation in the Permanent Joint Board on Defense, a bilateral military framework with Canada that has existed since 1940. U.S. officials cited Ottawa’s failure to provide a credible plan to meet NATO defense spending targets as the primary reason for the freeze.
The move also follows deepening tension over Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to review and potentially scale back a planned purchase of American F-35 fighter jets. This suspension marks a significant fracture in the 86-year-old alliance, sparking concerns about the future of shared North American security and the modernization of the NORAD radar system.
While the Canadian government has downplayed the rebuke, defense analysts expect the U.S. to use this pause as leverage in upcoming trade and military procurement negotiations.
