Texas mandates Bible stories as required reading for five million public school students
The Texas State Board of Education voted today to become the first in the nation to mandate Bible stories and verses as required reading for over five million public school students.
Beginning in 2030, the new K-12 curriculum will integrate biblical passages alongside classic literature to provide what officials call necessary cultural and literary context for Western history. Supporters maintain that students cannot fully understand English literature or historical events without being familiar with the foundational narratives found in the Bible. Critics argue the move violates the constitutional separation of church and state by using taxpayer funds to promote religious texts in secular classrooms.
Legal challenges from civil rights groups are expected to follow as the state prepares to implement these standards across its expansive public school system.
