Should critical race theory be taught in K-12 education?
I feel like these questions are hard to understand and they are also understanding me wrong because…
However, I would also argue it is imperative to teach them how and why these things have been used historically within the United States, and beyond. Racism, sexism, classism, ableism, queerphobia, etc are interconnected issues, and ensuring that the future generation recognizes them as such the first step is ensuring they can fight against them. It may be a daunting task, but it starts with simply teaching kids empathy, and encouraging them to be curious, ask questions, and most importantly, not punish them when they begin to question authority & what they are being taught to believe as the truth; it is within their right as human beings to be treated with respect, and their thoughts & actions must be held to the same standard.
For those who are concerned about exposing their children to “inappropriate” information or that it might be “too difficult” to understand: first and foremost, these topics should be handled with care, and imperatively allow kids to express questions, thoughts, or feelings regarding. Secondly, children already engage with and contend with the effects of numerous societal issues whether you realize it or not. Providing them a vocabulary to better discuss these problems is beneficial not just to their mental & physical wellbeing, but for the collective as a whole
